Specialist Maths without 1/2 (Advanced General)

So, our school doesnt offer 1/2 spesh and say "methods 1/2" is enough. is 1/2 really needed? if so is it worth doing it over the holidays (specific chapters?)

- I'm sure this is with many schools, but our school states a B+ in Methods (overall grade) is sufficient to get into specialist and do well, for those who have done specialist and done well, what sort of grade in 1/2 should i really be getting/looking at to do well?

I want to hopefully get a 37 or so, so it scales to a 50, but their are a few people in my cohort in year 11 that have finished the course and done Unit 3 methods, and unit 3 specialist. So it will be hard to get a good rank with these people in the class.

Any feedback/advice/help would be great, as this has been bugging me for a while.

Thanks

Advanced GM isn't really needed, but some topics you may want to learn before next year include: complex numbers, polar coordinates, vectors and kinematics, as these you don't do in Methods 1/2. You may also want to do some work on hyperbola and ellipses. The calculus part of Spesh builds on from Methods 3/4, so a lot of schools encourage students to do Methods 3/4 and Spesh 3/4 at the same time. So, a lot of the stuff you need to know for Spesh 3/4, you learn in Methods 3/4.

B+ average in methods should be sufficient to do spesh but it depends on the difficulty of your tests/SACs. If your at the top of your cohort for Methods 1/2, then you should do quite well in Spesh 3/4. I would say that just doing well in methods 1/2, doesn't mean you'll do well in Methods 3/4 and Spesh 3/4.

The important thing is to try your best and work very hard.

AGM is really essential if you wish to score highly studying both methods and specialist in year 12, in my opinion of course. But if you are highly motivated and a high scoring methods 1,2 student i.e >95pct average. I think you will probably be able to handle the demands of the rigorous course without knowledge of AGM and be able to achieve a study score of 37.

Is there such thing as 1/2 specialist? I thought it was only a 3/4?

I do specialist at the moment and if you are fairly competent with the methods coursework I would suggest you have the ability to succeed in specialist. The concepts of specialist are no more challenging it's just the further applications that gets to people. Really if you are devoted enough to invest the time and energy into the subject you'll be fine without advanced general.
