Is doing psychology 3/4 in year eleven without doing 1/2 a good idea?

It depends on the student and their specific abilities/needs, but if you are worried about not having the content of 1/2, you don't need it. Myself and many other friends didn't do it and we were fine. If you are really concerned, I've heard what overlaps is research methods and you can cover this yourself during summer holidays if you want! :)

I have a few tutoring students doing 3/4 psych without 1/2. I covered research methods with them over the summer holidays as this is the only relevant component. Many of them are outperforming their peers who have done 1/2 psych! :)

I'm a bit hesitant to bump this thread seeing as it is over a month old, but by the sounds of it, it isnt too late to add some input:

at my school, no students were allowed to do psych 1/2 in year 10, and about 45 or so of us did psych 3/4 in year 11 (all without 1/2). We had about 18 kids score above 40, with some seriously high scores in there!!
I can personally guarantee that everything you need to know in psych 3/4 is taught in psych 3/4, and even the one topic that crosses over from 1/2 (research methods) is 100% fully taught in the 3/4 textbook (and classes)

best of luck with your decision
