Writing efficient 'English' under time constraints

Hey,

The following may seem pretty simple to some, but for me it always hinders the process of my writing.

I am always very particular during any school task, and especially English, to ensure that I maximise the full vocabulary at my disposal and attempt to be extraordinarily efficient with my use of grammar to the best of my writing capabilities.

Alas, I have realised that this seems to be a weakness of mine. Constantly this 'particularity' is often my undoing and results in me rethinking ideas and questioning whether I can actually write appropriately at a Year 12 VCE standard.

Does anyone else feel the same way in this regard?

Hey :)
For VCE English, this is so common. I have so many friends who basically tell me that they cannot come up with ideas + good vocab + a proper essay within the prescribed time limit. The best way to combat this, is to be prepared in terms of how you will explain your ideas. When I study for an English SAC, and when I begin studying for the VCE English exam, I'm going to practice essay-writing because by doing this, I'll be able to have a very efficient and known means of explaining a particular idea, and during the exam/SAC, I'll spend less time worrying about how I'll explain an idea, and focus a lot more on how I'll make the vivid link to the question in text response, or address the ideas of the prompt in context, or properly analyse the language in language analysis.

Hope this helped!

I recommend writing more draft essays. And actually editing the draft once you've finished. Too many students try and write the "perfect essay" in one attempt.

The only way to improve essay writing is by constantly reading and writing papers. There are no shortcuts. Over time, you pick up various skills such as writing very efficiently.

Practice, practice, practice.

Know that ordinary language explained sophisticatedly with strong ANALYSIS and NOT complicated vocabulary will always be the strongest.

Try a couple of essay where you totally strip back your expression. Basic sentences without any flowery at all. Just try and hit analysis. This will be hard to do and seem like you're wasting all of your extra knowledge - but you have to do this in order to control yourself in the future!

Slowly reintroduce your extra language over time. After five or six essays, you should find the writing coming more naturally and fluidly to you.
