Looking for a level 2, semester 2 science subject
« on: June 20, 2014, 02:48:04 pm »

I am enrolled in PHYS20009 (Research-based Physiology) for next semester, which i plan to take concurrently with phys20008. but on second thought the slow burn, continuous onslaught style of assessment seems too far and i'm considering replacing it with another level 2 science subject.

specifically i need a subject where more study hours inputted = better grades, so i guess memorization subjects fit the bill eg anatomy, though pref not as intense and screwed up, probably biochemistry and molecular biology (bcmb20002) is the perfect example.

when i swap out of phys20009 i probably won't be able to get in there again cos it's a quota subject, so i might just stay in it if there's nothing else.

thanks for reading

Biochemical Regulation of Cell Function (BCMB20003) is the second semester continuation of BCMB20002, so that's probably the logical choice. I took it last year and scored a few points higher than I did in BCMB20002, and there was less stress in areas like metabolism because it just builds on what you had learnt previously. Plus, the class size is much smaller than first semester biochem because I don't think it's a prereq for anything (though I could be wrong on that one). If you have any specific questions about it let me know :)

(EDIT: also, the handbook says that Techniques is strongly recommended but honestly, if I can get in the mid-high 80s without taking it, it shouldn't impact on your results much.)

Phys20009 is a great subject!
Here are the reasons why:

*If you work smartly during the semester, you are most certainly going to be rewarded with a high mark (they showed statistics for how many people received a H1 during the previous semester that I took the subject and it was something like 50% :l Most subjects are like 20% )
*The content that is taught is 90% the same as PHYS20008, so it's really just like doing one physiology subject as opposed to two
*Not many (not sure if any at all) subjects allow you to hand in drafts for the staff to give you written feedback about how you can improve on the assignment for your final submission, PHYS20009 does!
*The lab classes are actually really fun, not boring at all!
* 1 lecture a week!
*The exam is worth 30% and 90% of the exam content is questions repeated from past exams, I found that you could really maximize your marks when you collaborated with other people about possible solutions

I'd reconsider switching the subject! PHYS20009 has been my highest subject mark to date

PHYS20009 is great, I agree. Don't drop it, it is a really easy subject to do well in!
Especially if you are doing 20008 at the same time  :)

Seconding this - I took it concurrently with techniques, and there was barely any overlap (a little with BCMB20002.) It's a bit easier then first semester biochem, and it's definitely a subject where study hours in is strongly proportional to the mark.

It's not a prereq for anything, although, speaking from experience, it does make the third year biochem subjects a lot more manageable (as you're already familiar with quite a few of the basic concepts, especially re receptor signalling, chromosome structure and apoptosis.)

I've also heard great things about PHYS20008. You don't have to work at it nearly as much as other subjects to get a H1, people actually have said to me that 'it's a joke how easy it is'. All it requires is regular effort throughout the semester, so if you don't slack off and leave every assessment to the last minute you will do quite well in it.

What are your subjects next sem melonbar? I've got phys20008/9 + pharm OR path (can't decide!!!! someone help?!) and I don't know what breadth to do :'(

I've done both pharm and path, and I definitely recommend pharm. It was probably one of the best coordinated subjects I've ever done. Check out some of the subject reviews as well, they'll definitely shed some light on what you learn and what's expected of you.

I'm enrolled in phys20008, phys20009, living longer and my last subject idk. because i have my major figured out (well either phys, hsf, or neuroscience), i could technically do a breadth in that 4th subject, because then i would have done 7 level 2 science subjects as per graduating reqs. but inner side of me says i should stop being a p00sy and use that slot to do Biochemical Regulation of Cell Function instead of a gpa booster. it's up in the air tbh.

That's exactly like my subjects last year, second semester. I did Genes and Genomes for my 4th subject.

I guess I've got pretty much the same subjects as you. I did living longer last year!

How did you find genes and genomes? I'm currently enrolled in phys + research based phys + path atm... haven't enrolled in a breadth yet. Do you think doing those 3 in conjunction with genes+genomes is craazy or is it very doable?

Idk i'm more a person who would choose a breadth as my fourth subject because of the reduced number of lectures.
I've heard path isn't too bad in terms of being able to do well in it.
Genes & genomes is all MCQ assessment but I think the exam is harder than the MST (for which the MST was almost identical to past exam questions) + I didn't like the second assignment and it is also pretty boring lol.

Any of the sports related breadths are the easiest things I have learnt since year 7. They are so easy to do well in.

turtle endorsed sports coaching. there's a thread about the subject i opened which could be helpful (use search). i'm probably doing it in february. i heard another easy breadth is school experience as breadth, and also 'understanding, knowing and learning' which is about tutoring and has a good subject review.
