Dream Shattering Email
« on: July 30, 2014, 07:00:33 pm »

Today I received an email which has shattered my dreams and made me depressed  :'(

Spoiler
"I write in reference to your mid-year VTAC offer of a Commonwealth supported place in the Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne. It has become apparent that you did not provide complete details about your previous studies within your VTAC application (in particular, your Semester 1 2014 tertiary enrolment at RMIT was not listed).

Your selection into the Bachelor of Commerce was based on your 2013 ATAR and your Access Melbourne (SEAS) application, yet applicants with tertiary results are not eligible to receive consideration under the Access Melbourne scheme. Now that the Faculty of Business and Economics is aware that you have Semester 1 tertiary results, they have determined that they must withdraw the offered place in the Bachelor of Commerce as your Semester 1 GPA and your 2013 ATAR must be considered in combination and are below the levels that were required of transfer applicants in this intake.

Should you choose to reapply for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce in a future intake, please ensure that your entire academic history is listed in your VTAC application."

I logged into my unimelb and it says that I'm not enrolled in any classes and my timetable is blank. I will assume that this withdrawal has already taken effect and that there is nothing I can do to appeal it.

This email came the day after I cancelled my enrolment at RMIT. I went to the hub today at RMIT to try to take the form back but they told me it was too late. They said I can speak to the staff in charge of the School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences tomorrow morning and they might re-enrol me in the BSci, but there is no guarantee. I may have lost my place as a university student this semester...

It's almost comical how shit my luck has been these past 2 years. I am really worried about what is going to happen if I can't get back into RMIT. What will I do?

Basically, it's my fault for fucking up the application, but at the same time, I wouldn't have received the offer even if I did fill it all in correctly. If, however, I did nothing for 6 months (no university) and then filled out the application, I would have been accepted. Also, if I had have got my first application correct and applied for Access Melbourne (the December 2013 application), then I would've been accepted right from the start and would never have had to have dealt with any of this in the first place.

I guess the real issue here is not that I've been rejected from my dream university, but rather that I cancelled my enrolment at RMIT the day before this email was sent to me. Currently, I'm not a university student at all. I've got myself into a lot of mess and I am worried that I won't be able to get out of this :(

Edit: At least I've learnt one thing: in the future I am going to re-read my VTAC application 100+ times to make sure that everything is correct and perfect and that I haven't missed anything. It's crazy what the consequences are for forgetting to fill in part of the application.

Edit2: The worst part about this is having to explain all of this to my family and friends :(

Man, I am so fucking sorry for you. This is TOTAL BULLSHIT.

Can't you speak to whoever sent you this email. So you forgot to fill in all the details, this seems like a MASSIVE over exaggeration. SPEAK TO THEM.

EDIT. Can you transfer into Arts? From there, you can make your way over to Commerce.

I went to the Commerce student centre and they told me that there isn't anything I can do about it. I suppose I could reply to the email, but I doubt it will change anything. They seem to be 100% bureaucratic and 0% sympathetic.

Best case scenario is that RMIT lets me back in, then I score well in semester 2 and get into UoM in semester 1 next year. But at this point in time, I don't even know if they will accept me. I will find out tomorrow morning I guess...

Applications have closed for the semester 2 intake. I can't get into anything at UoM, and probably not anything from any university. I think my only options are to either get back into BSci at RMIT or take a semester off studying.

It makes it more difficult because I live in Student Accommodation and I pay rent and receive money from Centrelink. I think they will start giving me problems the moment I tell them that I am no longer enrolled at university.

Explain your situation to Centrelink, I'm certain they will show you sympathy. Stay positive buddy!  RMIT will let you back in, you only have to work ONE MORE semester (12 weeks more) and the BOOM, you apply straight back to MelbUni with your awesome marks and complete the application properly this time.

Hey, I have faith in you! YOU WILL GET INTO MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY. The road is pretty fucked up at the moment, but it doesn't matter what pace you're moving at, as long as you get there in the end.

You will make it one day. Melbourne University is your dream and no one can take that from you unless you allow them to. I have no doubt, and remember.

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” - Martin Luther King.

(cheesy, I know)

Still, there's nothing you can do at this point - it's out of your hands. You have to sit with this painful feeling, but understand that this is temporary pain. The sun will still rise tomorrow and good things will come to you in time.

From my (limited) experience RMIT tends to be more sympathetic and understanding. Explain your situation to the school - I feel quite sure they can re-enrol you. :)

Do tell them ASAP though. I hear their fraud department is second to none. They can actually charge you with fraud if they wanted to (for a small amount i doubt they would). It's fairly guaranteed they will find out sooner or later (probably from the uni). It's best you tell them once you're no longer a student so everything starts to get sorted now. If you leave it longer, you'll probably just be digging a deeper hole re: repayments, etc.

Damn, friend :-( How did VTAC not make it clear?! How did you miss the part where you needed to fill in info about your semester of tertiary education? Poor form of VTAC if they don't make that sort of important info very obvious!! Very sorry to hear about your situation, S@S. It's always so much worse when your hopes were high.
Try to get back into RMIT and nail Semester 2. And like Ballerina said, RMIT is a fantastic university! Good luck with everything. It will all work out in the end, even if the road is bumpy. x

Today I spoke to the RMIT School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences at 9am and they told me that I should send an email to them and CC the coordinator, explaining my situation and requesting to be enrolled back, so I did that right away. It's been 12 hours since I sent the email and still no reply from anyone. Also, tomorrow is the last day that students can add classes at RMIT, so I feel like waiting patiently for a reply is not an option for me. I really need to be proactive about this and pester everyone, or else I will be left with the response "sorry, it's too late for that".

This is so damn stressful :( All I want to do is disappear from the world and give myself time to come to terms with what's happened, but I know that these next few days are critical for me and I need to act now or else my situation will only worsen...

I couldn't even imagine what you're going through, but just know that you will have the support of everyone here on AN. I'm hoping you at least get accepted back into RMIT so you can transfer into UoM next year.  :)

Stay strong buddy.

Call them today, mention that you sent an e-mail and are calling because you are afraid that you may not be able to enrol into class.
