Assessed Prac (Unit 2) - Identifying Substances

On Tuesday, I have this assessed practical where I am to "devise an experiment to accurately identify substances using precipitation reactions and acid base indicators." I know it's only Unit 2, but I want to get a strong preparation for Unit 3/4 chem (from what I've heard from my teacher it relies heavily on knowledge gained from Units 1/2). I think most of the substances will be metal-(insert here) solutions.

Anyway, how would you go about it? I've brainstormed a few ideas, but beyond that I'm really stuck:

- Use the lime water method to test CO2 production, telling me if the substance is a metal carbonate or a metal hydrogen carbonate
- Use the match to test for a POP when I release gas from a test tube with substance and water, telling me that the substance releases hydrogen gas and therefore it's a metal.
