Performance Enhancement
Spina:
Hi guys,
I would just like someone to clarify what to know for this area of study. I have gone through the study design and the points seem a little broad to me and to make things worse, my school is not teaching this area of study to us, instead we have to teach it to each other. I am finding it difficult to realise what information is relevant and what is irrelevant.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

Hey there,
Could you maybe elaborate on what's causing you confusion?
While sometimes I think textbooks and teachers (not your case, I guess) can be vague about what you need to know in this area of study, I think the VCAA study design actually does quite a good job.
More than happy to provide some clarification if you elaborate a bit though :)

Sorry, I realise what I said above is quite vague, my apologies. The thing is I don't really know what to ask because I don't know what t study. I guess what I would like to know is, what information about a certain method would you need to know for SACs/Exams?
For example, what information would be relevant for caffeine supplementation and what wouldn't be?
Again, sorry if that is unclear but I really am confused by what areas to study in this topic and how much depth we need to know it in.

No problems at all, I just wanted to make sure I was answering the right questions :)
In terms of any (legal or illegal) performance enhancing substances, I would be studying for:
* The very basics of how athletes consume it, nothing more.
* How specifically it enhances performance, and for which events/athletes/etc.
* Some of the potential side-effects.
* Some of the potential alternatives (esp. for illegal substances).
* That's basically it.
With everything I noted above, SACs sometimes go into more detail, so be on the safe side if possible.
Using caffeine supplementation as the example, I wouldn't worry about anything more than having a working understanding of roughly how many mg an athlete should take. I wouldn't worry about some of the tiny details either, such as what happens when someone takes it on an empty stomach, etc.
Does that help?
