Can I do 3/4 with under 65% Average?

Our methods teachers give recommendations to the school on who should continue on to Methods 3+4.
The other class is allowed to pass with over 40% whilst our teacher only recommends us if we have over 65%.
I have over 40% but under 65%, I know that I should have tried harder this year (Year 10).
My teacher has therefore recommended me to repeat 1+2, am I legally allowed to do 3+4 If I want to?

yes your are legally allowed, but if you've been getting 65% and your teacher has recommended you to repeat it is best you follow with her, with 65% means you havent grasped the content fully yet and you really dont want to be extending your knowledge without have the basic knowledge consolidated.

edit: school may force you to do 1/2 again if the teacher really thinks you shouldnt move up, but other than that theres no other factors.

You can do any 3/4 without even having done the 1/2, so you definitely COULD do it.

However, while I don't have all the information, you clearly have a chance to redo 1/2 and get yourself on better grounds before continuing on to 3/4. With a score under 65% (I'd even extend it to 70%) in methods, I would suggest that if you can redo 1/2, you should. You might be sitting there thinking, "I don't like maths, I only need a 25 in methods anyway to do my course/I don't want to get a 40 score anyway/[insert other comment tending to not wanting to get an A+]", but under 65 I personally believe would extend to a study score under 25 if you continued the same habits and same scores into 3/4.

Methods is important in the idea that if you get over 30, you've met the pre-requisites for every course in terms of mathematics. The issue is, if you go on as you are now, I can't see you getting over 25, and you never know what the future might hold, regardless of what you think now.

is it possible to do methods 3/4 without 1/2? youd struggle heaps.

Imagine a person coming from general 1/2 maths to methods 3/4, they would struggle heaps!

Yeah it's possible because the 1/2 Methods course is basically 75% similar to the 3/4 course. The probability part is easier in Year 12, arguably. Hardest "step up" is mod graphs, transformations and calculus. The rest is very similar.

But, you don't have the experience of realising your mistakes if you do 3/4 without 1/2.

Difficulty isn't the topic of conversation when I said that - AFAIK VCAA will let you do 3/4 anything without having one its 1/2 equivalent (where it exists).

In fact, I reckon doing any science without 1/2 would be much harder than doing methods without 1/2, and people do 3/4 sciences without 1/2 all the time.

I did Methods 3/4 and Specialist 3/4 without doing either of their 1/2s. I didn't struggle much but I did some study over the summer, which helped. I probably would have done slightly better if I'd done the 1/2s but I didn't need them.

It's pretty much up to the school whether they let you skip units 1/2 of a subject, but it's also up to the school if they think you need to repeat.

So op either needs to convince their school to let them do methods 3/4 (perhaps by completing revision work over summer holidays?) or they need to redo 1/2.

I recommend repeating Methods 1/2. Methods 3/4 has very similar content to Methods 1/2, but at a significantly more advanced level. You WILL struggle if you haven't mastered the Methods 1/2 content. You will thrive in Methods 3/4 if you give yourself a second chance at Methods 1/2 and really master the content.
