Question about Bachelor of science course structure
« on: September 16, 2014, 07:10:23 pm »

Im thinking of doing three subjects per semester until the end of my degree, and I'm wondering if I'm allowed to complete more than the 300 points that the handbook states.

Does anybody know? I know this is one for the student centre but I'm hoping someone here already knows so I can avoid going there.

Thanks.

No, you cannot exceed 300 points.
Occasionally, if you mess up and do something like change majors really late and have to take some extra prerequisite subjects, the Student Centre can help you out a bit with rescinding some units that you've already taken.
But generally, taking more than 300 points unless there's been a big oversight is frowned upon and not allowed.

(Source: I tried to do it myself, thankfully found out early that it's not possible)

The only exception is that doing a diploma - but that's adding a qualification so that's what allows you to exceed 300 points (e.g. if you do the maths diploma you get a BSc with major in X, and a diploma of maths.)

Thanks guys. The only reason I asked is because I messed up my subject selection this year and was wondering if I could take more than 300 points to fix it. But good news is I worked it out by taking 3 subjects per semester (which i believe still counts as full-time study), which will extend the bachelor degree to 4 years, and also taking a leave of absence.

Is there any option to do the subjects you need to do over summer? There are quite a few first year science subject that are can be done in the study periods from January to March.

Yeah I looked into that, turns out doing it the way I mentioned above worked out a bit better. The only thing is I'm extending my degree by a year but at least I get a 6 month leave of absence which I'll probably use to try and find some work experience.
