Diploma in Languages Query

Digging around ATARNotes and clicking far too many links around the Melb Uni website, I just could not find a definitive answer to my question. If you can help, thank you in advance!

I have accepted my Melbourne University offer, enrolled in my subjects, set up my student e-mail and have now also applied to do a Diploma in Languages in Russian.

Given that I already have 4 subjects per semester before the Diploma in Languages, does this mean I'll now be taking 5 subjects per semester?

If it makes any difference, I have not selected Russian as breadth in my biomed degree (I've selected French) - so there's no cross-crediting.

Thanks!

Hello,   We were advised on the change of prefs day not to start the diploma until 2nd year, otherwise it will have ramifications with 1st year not being covered by HECS.

They told us to do the language as breadth or elective in first year and then start the Diploma in 2nd year  ( credits are given for the 1st year subjects)

Financial and durational considerations
Commencing the language in the first semester of your substantive course and the diploma in your second or third year will allow cross-crediting of subjects. On the other hand, commencing both the language and the diploma at the start of your substantive course will preclude cross-crediting: you will pay for all your language subjects, and the duration of your studies will be extended by one year.

We are certainly going to ask more on Friday at the advice day to make double sure.

So the problem is, I am using my degree breadths to do French - and want to do a second language via the dip lang. I can't cross-credit because I want to do both languages!

Slightly worried as I've already submitted my application - but no hassles, will obviously ask on Friday!

Usually it's 3 subjects in your degree plus 1 diploma subject per semester once you are accepted into the diploma.

Thanks! Still - there are three core subjects per semester in biomed. So a dip lang would mean I would have to use my breadth to do it.

Is it impossible, then, to study two languages + biomed?

I would go to the d-lang info session on Friday and see if they can help you (there's usually time for questions after the sessions). Otherwise ask at the arts student centre :)

Sorry for hijacking but does this also apply to the other concurrent diplomas? If I was to start the diploma in 2nd year, would I need to do the subject as a breadth?
