Difficulty Applying for Advanced Standing

I am having trouble applying for Advanced Standing. I completed 8 subjects at RMIT and now I have been told I have to submit an online application, but the application is confusing me.

In one section, it says "Attach Course Documents". What is a course document?
In another section, it says "Attach Subject Document". What is a subject document?
In another section, it says "Select Institute / Course For Subject", and it is a required field, but when I click on the box to select an option, it is completely empty... is this just my computer or does this happen to everyone?
And in another section, it says "Equivalent UoM Subject/ Course Component". How do I know what the UoM equivalent of my subjects are? Even basic things like Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 are taught slightly differently at RMIT compared to UoM... does that mean that there is no UoM equivalent of Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 at RMIT?

Is there some sort of template or sample document I can look at for an Advanced Standing application? I don't want to screw this up because I have a very bad history of screwing up applications.

Best to pop over to your student centre this week and sort through it there.

There's also advanced standing info sessions for commerce on academic advice day in case you didn't know.
Congratulations on the offer!

Thanks guys :)

Yeah I've been to the Commerce Student Centre 3 times... I feel like I am borderline harassing them now.

I also went to the Advanced Standing lecture today, but unfortunately, it wasn't very helpful. The guy told us a few things we need to put on the application and he emphasised to include as much information as possible, but he wasn't that specific and he didn't give any sample documents for us to look at, which was a bit disappointing. Then he went on to talk about how a lot of people don't include enough information on their application, which means they have to resubmit their application.

I'll just try my best and if the form I fill out / documents I upload aren't good enough for them, then they'll email me in about 1-2 weeks and ask me to redo it.

Tbh, I'm not that sure I even need Advanced Standing. 4/6 of my breadth subjects are going towards compulsory subjects for my Actuarial Studies major, so the most I can possibly get out of this is credit for 2 breadth subjects. There's really not much to lose if I miss out on this.

I think the documents might be your transcript from RMIT and handbook descriptions of the subjects you want credited. They'd need a transcript to prove you did the units and the descriptions to show them that your rmit subjects are similar to uom ones.

Yeah that's what he showed us in the lecture. It's just much easier for me to understand if I have some sort of sample document to look at. When someone just gives me a list of things to include and says "put all this information into a file and upload it", it can be a bit ambiguous, especially when they use words like "this will normally be...". And when it asks me for "assessment details", a lot of subjects at RMIT don't show a clear list of assessment details, but instead just hand us a bunch of assignments one by one, causing me to forget what each assessment is worth. I have to go hunting for all of this information because it's not just neatly placed in one document like Melbourne Uni expects it to be.

But I'll just give whatever information I can about each subject and then they can respond and tell me if it's sufficient or insufficient.

You only get three level 1 breadth subjects, so if you want to do the Calc 2/Lin Alg pathway then at most you could credit Calc 2 and Lin Alg and another subject.

If you want to do the Accelerated pathway then at most you'll only receive credit for 1 subject.

Thanks for the info :)

Yeah I'm planning to do the Accelerated Pathway. I guess with only 1 subject to credit, it's hardly worth it... I am better off using this subject to do something interesting, like another maths subject, or even a business law subject, or a psychology subject, or even wine tasting haha.

I'll try to fill out the application regardless, but no stress if I don't get it done properly, or if my subjects aren't recognised.

From a GPA perspective, it makes more sense for me not to get my level 1 subjects credited, since a subject I get credited will not count towards my GPA, whereas a level 1 subject I do at Melb Uni can potentially boost up my GPA.

I'd think that 'subject document' would be the most detailed syllabus of the course that you have got. If your unit has not already been assessed recently, then they need something to base their assessment of.

I think the idea with choosing the equivalent unit is so that you can try and get your unit accredited to something similar. Generally, a unit only needs to be substantially similar, not exactly, to be recognised as equivalent (the figure 80% jumps at me, but I'm not sure where from). Just pick whatever unit is most similar.
