What Subjects Should I Choose?
« on: August 11, 2009, 07:52:58 pm »

I'm in year 10 at the moment, and need to choose my VCE subjects soon, so I'm just trying to get as much feedback as possible about what I should do.
So far, these are the subjects I'm leaning towards;
English 1/2
Physics 1/2
Texts and Traditions 1/2 (required by my school)
Maths Methods 1/2
Specialist Maths 1/2
Systems Engineering 1/2
Psychology 3/4

I was also wondering if it is feasible to do more than one 3/4 subject in year 11?

Any advice on choosing subjects would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Do the subjects you are passionate about, drop the ones you are not.

the number of unit 3/4 subjects you could do in year 11 depends very much on your school. my school allows only one, so i picked up chinese during the second term of yr 11

you may seek advice from your careers coordinator they will provide you with much insight about your school's requirements. :) and yes , definitely choose the ones you are passionate about!

Have you done the 1/2s for any subjects you're considering doing 3/4s for in Year 11?

If you haven't, then I wouldn't advise taking Methods, Spec or English without having done 1/2.
Not sure about the others, as I've never done them.

Anywayz... yes, it's perfectly plausible to do 2 3/4s in Year 11, so long as you think you'll be able to manage your time carefully.

And (of course) pick something you're actually interested in... otherwise it just won't last >.>

I'm currently doing 2 3/4 units (Biology and Enviro science) in year 11 as well as a full work load (no studies). I currently find it a nice work load and have not found myself lacking in either subject for the year. When teachers are away and I have studies (school policy) I find I don't have work and have adjusted to the increased demand of 2 3/4s.
The big plus is less units in year 12 or a 'back-up' if you do not do as well in a subject to get you your required ENTER.
Hope that helps.

It's definitely feasible to do two 3/4s in year 11 - plenty of students do that. Looking at your list though the only subject I'd suggest you do a 3/4 for (apart from psych) is systems engineering. The others, you really need the background learning from 1/2. I tutored someone in 3/4 chemistry who had not done 1/2 and he really, really, REALLY struggled (think he ended up with like an E for the midyear though the fact that he did no work might have something to do with it lol).

But I don't really know what systems engineering involves so it's just a guess.

If you're really good at English then maybe 3/4 for that is possible if your school allows it. But I'd advise against it.

I think it's better to do 2 3/4 subjects for a couple of reasons. First of all if you're like me, you'll do 2 3/4 subjects in year 11 hence you only have to do 4 3/4 subjects in year 12 which I'm doing at the moment. The downside to that is it feels like you're doing little work. The upside is you have way more time on your hands to spend studying other subjects.

Alternatively, in case you don't do well in one of your 3/4 subjects, you can still do 5 in year 12 hence you'll have 7 subjects, 6 of which count towards your enter, and so any subjects you didn't do so well in won't count

Thirdly doing 2 3/4 subjects makes it feel more like you're in year 12 than only doing one. This will make the transition from year 11 to year 12 much easier.

if u were planning on doing two 3/4 subjects, id actually recommend doing text and traditions with psych.
For TT you dont really need units 1/2 to do 3/4. plus its not as time consuming or challenging as the other subjects u hav listed  :)

I'd beg to differ with Texts and Traditions. Everyone at my school who did it last year struggled and the top score was a 36.
If you do decide to do a 3/4 Religion subject, then do 3/4 Religion and Society. It's much easier to understand and I found it rather interesting

systems engineering is actually pretty good as a 3/4 in year 11 because its like the electronics part of physics and a bit forces and (structures and materials i believe (not 100% sure))) << the only thing is it scales down horribly which means you have to give quite an effort to do well
