What do some acids and bases have in common when they come into contact with solid substances?

I was thinking the answer could be that they both corrode/burn solid substances on contact :S

Yeah I think they react exothermically (give out heat)

I totally agree there..

umm..
another possibility is that some solid substances may dissolve in them, depending on the state of the acids/bases, though they are generally aqueous. the nature of the solid may also determine its solubility in different solutions
