Transferring into BCom

I'm starting uni semester 1 2015 in arts and I'm hoping to transfer into commerce at mid year, or at the end of semester 2.

If I'm accepted - how does the transfer work out, especially in mid year? In commerce, I'd have done an economics/finance double major with an environments breath (real estate) and/or principles of business law. If I did an economics major, another major, power foundation studies with commerce breadth, would all my credits seamlessly transfer across into BCom, and could I continue without having to go into year 1 again? Or would I have to re-take some subjects to gain more credits or fulfil prerequisites as majors are worth more credits than breadth.

So far, I'm definitely taking the economics major. Other areas that interest me is the politics and international studies major, power foundation studies, the principles of business law breadth, and property breadth (environments). However, should I do Quantitative Methods 1 or Finance 1 for breadth in Semester 1 if I want to do BCom? I've already done methods, so I don't need to do MAST10012.

Given my goals and interests - what subjects should I pick?

Your best option if you are going to transfer to commerce is to do these subjects in sem 1

Intro Micro
QM1
Finance 1
Breadth (which real estate one are you looking at doing?)

If you do MULT10018 Power in Sem 1 as Arts foundation, it would not be credited as breadth if you transfer to BCom (confirm this one with the Commerce Student Centre).

Are all Arts majors required to take foundation studies in Sem 1 of first year? If not, then you can do

Intro Microeconomics
QM 1
Finance 1
Environments Breadth (or Arts Foundation if you really have to do one)

I'm 80% sure that if you transfer mid year they still look at your ATAR as well as your WAM so you want to make sure you have higher than the minimum ATAR to get into Commerce otherwise if you transfer at the end of the year, your WAM is what they mostly look at.

I had a 90.0 ATAR, which is 3 less than the minimum ATAR of 93 for Commerce. Would that affect a mid year application too much, or would it be irrelevant if I had a high enough WAM? Would I get in with a 75-80 WAM?

Thanks for that - sounds like that's the way to go, but aren't the foundation subjects compulsory? I heard that there's a requirement you have to do at least 1 arts major or discipline.

Also, what's the difficulty like on the maths subjects (QM1)? I'm ok at it - not my strongest point though, so I'd want to maximise my chances of getting in. Should I subjects that I like more in Semester 1 (and more likely to do well in), or should I do all the prereqs first for the subjects I'd like to take in BCom?

It changes each year but realistically you'll need 80 minimum to have any chance of transferring. I would be looking at 85+ to be competitive.

Steven is referring to WAM I'm assuming.
I can't remember where I read it from but I read that your ATAR is weighed more than your WAM if you transfer mid year because they look at the last 12 months of your study. I also read that you need the minimum ATAR but, like I said I can't remember where I read it from but it was definitely on AN in the UoM section (maybe AskUoM or UoM General chat).

Don't let it deter you from applying because you never know. Best case you get in and worse case you apply at the end of the year.

Good luck!

Cheers, probably should have specified I was talking about WAM.

My understanding is that they weight your ATAR and WAM equally, but that isn't based on policy I've read rather talking to the admissions office.
