Revision Lectures
Gloamglozer:
I think it's the time of the year where many students are deciding which companies they should invest their money and time into to achieve the best possible scores in their exams.
These are the lectures which I plan to attend or deciding to attend are:
1. English Language:
* VATE
Not only is VATE one of the few companies that actually provides lectures to Language students, but judging from their new book "Living Lingo", they seem to be a pretty good company that I'm willing to try out.
2. Methods (CAS): I'm tossing up between either:
* NEAP
* MAV (Only considering since Mao said it was "pretty good" in this thread. Has anyone else been to these lectures?)
* Derrick Ha
Since I haven't attended any of those, I'm still unsure which lectures I should attend.
3. Further: I'm undecided between either:
* TSFX
* MAV
Although I believe I don't really need to attend a revision lecture for Further, I think I'll still go so I can report back on my experiences.
4. Chemistry:
* NEAP
I attended NEAP revision lectures in Unit 3 and I have to say that their Chem notes were well summarised and definitely very concise that didn't go off in unnecessary tangents.
5. Physics:
* TSFX
Only choosing this because I think it is the last resort.
Now it's time to share my experiences:
1. English Language - Haven't been to any programs associated with it except for the VCE English Language Enrichment Day which was held a few weeks ago at Melbourne Uni. The Enrichment Day itself was pretty rewarding since it mostly focused on spoken language, which is the second area of study in Unit 4. It definitely gave my class (my teacher made my class go as an "excursion") a head start on spoken language since we hadn't started on it back then.
2. Methods (CAS):
* TSFX - I attended the TSFX revision lecture last year for Units 1+2 and other TSFX Methods lectures and to be honest, I felt that it wasn't really worth the time. The analysis questions that were provided were extremely hard and just like when I was completing the 2009 TSFX Chemistry paper, I felt like I just wasted a couple of months of my life. The lecturer who does Methods is the same as one of the Chem ones so as time grows on, the lecture does get quite tedious. During the lecture, I remember being completely lost and because I already felt bad about myself that I couldn't follow, I just couldn't concentrate and hence, just didn't get much out of the lecture except for the basics.
3. Further: Can't really comment on this because I only picked up Further this year and the only lecture I've attended is the TSFX Summer School. I reckon the lectures were presented pretty well but the notes on the other hand, didn't go into a lot of detail and only gave the fundamentals that you needed to know. Despite this, you could argue that it was "Summer School" and the purpose of such programs is to provide a "head start" so when you learn it a second time at school, it sinks in better in your long term memory.
4. Chemistry:
* TSFX - I attended the revision lectures last year and I found that there notes rambled on a little bit. With regards to their marketing, they say something along the lines that "students will receive 567 pages of notes" is really quite deceiving. As shinny said before in this thread, the TSFX's notes are printed in large print and do have lots of spacing. In terms of the presentation of the lecture, I reckon it's presented quite well and quite coherently up until the last few hours (especially after 2:00 P.M.) where I felt really tired and restless. As a result, I just tuned out and really didn't get much out of the lecture after this.
5. Physics:
* NEAP - I went to the Physics revision lecture in Unit 3 and I reckon the level is too simplistic. The questions they provided were waaaay too easy and although you could argue that the Unit 3 exam was a piece of cake, who knows what the Unit 4 exam holds? The lectures themselves weren't the best and combining that with terribly easy questions makes me want to steer clear from NEAP this semester.
* TSFX - I've attended pretty much every Physics lecture offered since Unit 1 in 2008. The only exception was this year in Unit 3 where I went to NEAP instead. I believe that the lectures were better presented than NEAP and they do contain some harder questions that are pretty good practice.
Please Note: The above comments may differ from each person and I am merely giving my opinions and experiences with the lectures that I have attended since there has been lots of posts from members asking which lectures they should attend.
Hooligan:
hey there,
I usually just look around the forum, but today when I bumped into your thread, I couldn't help but post. What a considerate person you are, indeed. Taking your time, for the benefit of others. I can't see a better act.
Thanks soo much for your review Gloamglozer. It's truly going to help me choose more carefully toward the end of this semester. :)
Some of my random views:
- I must agree with you about some of the TSFX lectures... they tend to get very long and somewhat overwhelming and a waste of time towards the end of the lecture... they never seem to get through what they want... however, the upside is that they have pretty decent notes, I guess... =P I think they should split their lectures into two days, each being half a day. Even though its a trouble getting there and what not, but we'll get more of the stuff in, if we aren't soo tired out.
- I've never been to any NEAP lectures ones before... where do they hold them? what are the times like? do they go for the whole day like TSFX? Whats the moola like on each lecture?
- Its the first time I've heard of Derric Ha lectures, however for some odd reason, his name rings a bell... have you been to any of his lectures before?
- The TSFX physics lecture was quite decent. I used to always goes to Access Education lectures 'cause they were cheap, until I went to one TSFX one, and I found how much more superior their notes and lectures are, and now I am too scared to go anywhere else, scared I may waste my money, time when I could be attending a TSFX lecture.... what do you think?
- Speaking about Physics, the exam, I must say I found it quite easy myself, however, I some how only got a C+ :( obviously the scaling played a part in this... *sigh* on the other hand, chem which I thought was soo hard, I managed to hit a B... was quite surprised actually... how did you go? You sound soo organised. You must've did awesome...
- A friend of mine who did Methods 3&4 last year gave me her MAV notes, and told me the lecture was crap... :-\
TonyHem:
Your performance on the exam is not scaled.

Sorry, I meant the distribution of marks, and hence the grade-cut offs. Apologies.
