hi guys
i'm hosting for uni soon and I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone here done it before and can give me a run down of what happens?
I joined uni mid-sem and never got a chance to have a host to host me and no one has told me exactly what to do yet. I have a general idea, to just plan out places to take the students to and play get-to-know-you games during the day but is that it?
Thanks
Pretty much! You introduce yourself, then get everyone to introduce themselves. Or you can pair them up with someone, give them 5 minutes to get to know one another - then they have to introduce their partner to the group. UMSU people would've given you some ideas for ice-breaker games right?
Then after all those games I'd take them for a tour around campus. Show them the good stuff like where to get good coffee, the good hangout spots, important buildings like student centres etc. It's very easy for your group to get lost because there are so many other groups doing tours at the same time. Also - make sure the rest of the group catches up before you start talking about what x building is. It's pretty hard for them to hear what you're saying at the back.
And like what Mr T-Rav said, some hosts would combine their groups and do the tours together. This is a good option if you don't know the campus well enough.
I always finished my host group stuff early because I know they'll want to go to the fairs to get all the free stuff and do their own thing. I guess depending on what time your host group is meeting, you can all break for lunch after the campus tour and say to meet everyone back at a certain place at x time. Then you can take them to the fair.
