Chemistry Aspirin SAC Write up

Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering what I need to do for the chemistry aspirin SAC. We did the practical the other day. Now we'll be doing the written part. What do I need to know for it? Do we just write the procedure and our results and answer questions about the aspirin? How long is it? Do we write a practical report for it? Also do we need to know about acetic anhydride and acetic acid? Thanks in advance.

Hi!
I did mine a few weeks ago and we had to write about errors/flaws in the practical. (Eg. loosing aspirin in the process of moving it from the flask to the buchner) We also had to state how this affected the percentage yield of the aspirin. Other things we had to include were the chemical pathway to form an ester (aspirin) and how we could tell that the aspirin was formed (Eg. Smell of vinegar, white powder formed). Why salicylic acid can't be used on it's own and the purpose of aspirin (soothe headaches etc) We didn't do any of the practical report since we filled out our logbooks and handed them in. We did purely a discussion/conclusion. However, it depends pn whatever your teacher specified. So we didn't write any of the procedure since it was already on the log book. We only had to know about acetic anhydride and not acetoc acid because we used aceytic anydride in the practical, so acetic acid was useless to us. Anyway, hope this helped!
