Melbourne Uni Questions

Hey Guys,

I got some questions about Melbourne Uni and what you can and cannot do

1.) What are best subjects/degree to choose if you are interested in the commerce/engineering field?
2.) Is it possible to do a Bachelor of Commerce degree and have the correct prereqs to do Masters in Engineering/Science area?
3.) Where can you go with a commerce degree from Melbourne

Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom  8) (y)

B.Com followed by M.Eng sounds like the most appropiate. Subject selection will depend on what major you are interested in.

Yes, although you need to follow a relatively set path right from the beginning.
3.) Where can you go with a commerce degree from Melbourne
Depends on your major. If you wanted to study internationally you may need to do honours first, many places do not recognise the 3 year ugrad.

Thanks Steven, are you also doing BCom or something else? I've looked into Monash's double degree, but ITS SO FAR and it just doesn't have the same appeal Melbourne does.

Regarding 3), a very common pathway is Undergrad 3 years---->Workplace. A lot of people in BCom go for a job right after their degree(graduate spots generally) and don't go for postgraduate studies like Honours and Masters unless they are interested in research.
2014-2017: Bcom (Economics/Finance), Dip Maths (Discrete Maths and Operations Research) at Unimelb

Thanks for the insight notveryasian. I did some research last night regarding the engineering breadths etc. Confused on one thing though. If I do lets say Mechanical systems as a breadth and major in it, can i still major in a commerce subject such as finance?

Yes. I don't think you will be able to major in two commerce majors though.

1) Perhaps try BCom with Engineering breadth, then if you realise you want Engineering, then you can proceed to Master of Engineering. Having a good foundation on business could be help you in your Engineering career. If you decide that perhaps Engineering is not for you, then at least you're in BCom and can apply for corporate/non-corporate graduate positions right away.

2) Yes (http://bcom.unimelb.edu.au/breadth/breadth_studies_in_engineering). Ask the Commerce Student Centre.

3) Depends on the major. Actuarial grads can go into investment fund companies, superannuation, banks, government, etc. Accounting grads can have careers in assurance services, financial reporting, controllership, consulting, advisory, taxation, banking, and government. Finance/Economics grads can go into corporate finance and restructuring, risk services, economic analysis, investment banking, financial advisory, treasury & wealth planning, academe, government, etc. Management/Marketing grads can have good careers in corporate/brand marketing, market research, operations & supply chain management, HR, and advertising.

Thanks jtvg, BCom with the engineering breadth was what I was looking at. Last question, haha, but is it possible to do Honours with the BCom, so Masters in Finance, then do Masters in Engineering. Sounds quite hectic, but is it possible? Thanks a lot :)

So you wanna do Finance Honours & Master of Engineering? If I understand your question correctly, yes, but Finance Honours ≠ Masters in Finance. So if you do BCom Hons in Finance, then do a Masters in Engineering, having done the breadth requirements, it is possible. Again, ask the CSC. Good luck!
