What are your thoughts on your team’s best 22 for next year? For the Dees, I’m thinking:
B: N Jetta | O McDonald | J Lever
HB: M Hibberd | S Frost | J Lewis
C: J Hunt | C Oliver | A Brayshaw
HF: C Petracca | J Hogan | J Melksham
F: J Garlett | T McDonald | J Harmes
R: M Gawn | N Jones | J Viney
I/C: D Tyson | A Neal-Bullen | C Salem | M Hannan
Back depth: J Smith | J Wagner | D Keilty | P McKenna | H Petty
Mid depth: B Vince | B Stretch | C Maynard | H Balic | T Bugg | J Kennedy-Harris | O Baker
Ruck depth: M King | L Filipovic
Forward depth: C Pedersen | A vandenBerg | S Weideman | T Smith | D Kent | B Fritsch | C Spargo | D Johnstone
I reckon that’s a pretty nice line-up. The Lever acquisition allows TMcDonald to play permanent forward/ruck. Decent enough depth on each line. Smith in particular could come in for, say, Frost (who I feel the coaches don’t rate as highly as supporters), for smaller forward lines (such as Richmond’s). I see Lewis playing back this year in a Hodge sort of role, allowing Hunt to play more on a wing. TMcDonald closer to home also allows Hogan to roam more up the ground, where I think he’s most dangerous. I have Harmes in the starting 18. He’s not big, but plays bigger than he is; he’s got a good mark on him. I think he’s dangerous in a pocket, but I’m sure many others will rotate through that position (vandenBerg if fully fit would be ideal).
Vince has been a great servant of the club, but I think he’s almost done. I don’t have him in the best 22 this year. I certainly don’t want him anywhere near the back 50. I was expecting us to draft a mature ruckman the other week, because without Spencer, I’m iffy on our ruck stocks if Gawn goes down again. Pedersen and TMcDonald can both do the job, and it’s good to have the flexible Pedersen in particular as depth, but I don’t think I’d want them doing it long-term. We also don’t have Watts now, who was good for a chop-out.
