What are some nice subjects to take in second year? Looking for anything related to economics, maths, or IT.

2014 - 2016 - CS @ LTU
2017 - ???

Holy smokes someone else that does IT!!

There's quite a few subjects you can do, depending on what your definition of 'nice' is. I would suggest some statistics subjects since my secondary discipline is that, but they all have pre-requisites (mostly first year statistics subjects).

Are you asking for Semester 2 since the census date has already passed for this one so you really can't change... Perhaps if you gave us an idea of what subjects you've done in your first year the LTU students on here could give you some suggestions (because most 2nd year subjects have pre-requisites of some sort).

Hey Moonlight, welcome to AN! Second year IT student at LTU? Chances are I've been your tutor before :)

Which electives did you choose in 1st year? In 2nd year prerequisites come into play and this can be an issue for some subjects.

I chose all IT/CS subjects in 2nd year. The skills I picked up made my final year easier. If you want a really good computer science elective, try Artificial Intelligence (CSE2AIF). Yes AIF is tough but it's also enlightening. I wrote a review for AIF back when I took the subject in 2013: Re: La Trobe University Subject Reviews and Ratings

Don't do CSE2IEP. That subject is rubbish.

If the department is still allowing IT students to enrol in CSE2DES (concurrently with your core CSE2ISD) then definitely choose DES.

You might also want to knock out CSE3PE in your second year (if you haven't already ;) )

Also keep in mind you can take a 3rd/4th/5th year level subject as an elective for 2nd year. The rule is you can go up but you can't go down. You'll just require subject coordinator approval.

Given you are interested in both IT and Maths, MAT2ALC might interest you.
2012-13: VCE at Parade College (Chemistry, English, Mathematical Methods, Physics and Specialist Mathematics).
2014-16: Bachelor of Science at La Trobe University (Mathematics and Statistics).
2017-17: Bachelor of Science (Honours) at La Trobe University (Mathematics).
2018-21: PhD at La Trobe University (Mathematics).

@Aaron,

Just the cores, OOF, ITF, IS, PE, etc... and business subjects as electives.

@MJRomeo81

I think I did have you for 1IS!
I'll read your AIF review. :)

@Conic

I'll look into it.

I also echo what MJRomeo stated about CSE3PE. If you can't find another subject, go with 3PE in Semester 2. Quite a number of students do this core in 1st/2nd year because it's considered "easy" and reduces the workload. Although when you get to third year you'll need to replace that with another subject. I am hoping to tutor that next semester.

In my 2nd year, I did CSE3OAD which is essentially 3rd year Java (pre-req is IOO) with MJRomeo, so that's another option you could consider... Obviously not that subject specifically but the idea that you can choose subjects from 2nd, 3rd, 4th (etc) years as long as you have the pre-requisites to do so.
