I want to do further maths in year 12, but its probably too late to change now ( to general maths).
Is year 11 similar to year 12 and is it much harder?
Thank you

Na lots of people do further without 1/2. There's a bit of overlap between methods and further anyway so everything wont be completely new anyway.

What are you doing instead of general maths, right now?
It says somewhere in one of the VCAA documents (very specific, I know ;) ) that Further Maths is meant to be taught with minimal assumed knowledge. It's pretty much based around work you should've covered from 7-10, although I suppose Matrices are probably new.

That being said, it's pretty similar to general maths. I wouldn't say it's necessarily harder, but the content is more in-depth. From a study score point of view - you'll nearly be disadvantaged no matter what (sorry?), because a lot of the stronger maths students do it for that juicy ATAR boost. If you're willing to put in the effort however, you'll be perfectly fine. Chances are if you're coming in from something other than foundation maths (but take that with a grain of salt; I've never looked at it) you'll already be able to jump straight into the work with a pretty good understanding.

Of course, that's just my opinion. If you feel like looking into it a bit further (punpunpun?) check out this stuff:

VCAA's Past Exams
The vTextbook Videos
and the notes from AN might be interesting
And maybe the further maths question thread?

There's little difference between the 1/2 and 3/4 course. There will be a few things taken out (and I think a few things coming in?) of the 3/4 course next year with the new study design coming into effect but I doubt this would hinder you. Obviously you'll be at a slight disadvantage as those who have done general maths will have been exposed to most of the content prior to further maths and having two years to learn the content is obviously better than one. This isn't really a major problem though and plenty of people pick up 3/4 without 1/2 regardless of mathematical ability. Just work consistently throughout the year (work on that bound reference!) and you'll be fine.
