The (unofficial official) debating thread

Hi all,

From chats in the Class of 2015 forum I can see that there's tons of other like-minded people who do some inter-school debating (that is, formal 3v3 debating such as that offered in DAV), so I figured why not create a thread for all of us to come together. There's tons of topics to discuss and hopefully you can pass on any tips you've come across whatever your level of experience.

I'll just introduce myself a bit. I've been doing DAV debating for about 4-5 years now, and it's by far one of my greatest hobbies. I also participate in a more regional competition (Royal South Street Society Debating) with the same team as in DAV. I'm most experienced as a 2nd speaker, which is probably my favourite role, but I do enjoy some flexibility in going third from time to time when the need arises.

Just some starter questions to get the ball rolling:

What debating positions are you best at and what do you enjoy about them? Do you participate in any other competitions outside of DAV or plan to continue it debating at university? What was you most memorable debating experience?

Have a nice day.

Yay this thread is good.

My extracurricular life outside of debating in university is very, very limited lol.

I've been debating throughout high school, still do at uni and adjudicate for the DAV  (do it, it's good pay!) :D In Uni 2nd speaker is reserved for the most senior member - ie. the 'team leader/pro - so I normally go 1st or 3rd. I am also not very good at debating but I really enjoy it :D In uni, there is also British Parliamentary debating which is as prominent as 3 v 3 debating.

Also, if you like debating and want to try a different type of debating, try ModelUN although it's definitely not as good as debating.

Hey guys! I'm a relative oldie (at least, in comparison to most high schools students) to this, seeing as i've participated in this since year 7 :D

Personally my favourite is 2nd, but i'm pretty flexible.
Only participate in DAV this year, unless you count diplomacy competitions like Evatt, and yeah, uni for sure! (although i do hear UoM has horrible times for uni debating, which might be a hassle).

Same applies to me, haha. I basically only do soccer and debating.

I actually am really interested in doing adjudicating next year for DAV! To make it even better, you get paid extra if you do it in regional areas such as Geelong/Ballarat which is definitely useful. I've been helping in my school's year 5/6 debating program and it's a really rewarding experience to see how younger debaters develop their skills and progressively improve, so I'd be happy to adjudicate any year level.

I didn't know that point about the 2nd usually being a team leader, it's quite interesting anyway. I was under the assumption that third is typically seen as the most experienced member and the 'captain', so to speak. (This isn't really true for my team, but I see it a lot regardless).

I haven't actually participated in this, but it could be an option in the future. My brother mentioned seeing a lot of Scotch/Melbourne High kids etc at uni not long ago for the Model UN competition. Something that's also a bit similar is mooting, but I can't say I've done it personally. I see you're doing Arts/Law atm, so have you considered or are you doing mooting? If so, what are your thoughts?

If we both end up at UoM we'll have to form a team together, for sure. Hopefully it just doesn't consume weekend time and I'd be excited to join MUDS.

Did DAV in Year 7/8

What was you most memorable debating experience?

The time I referred to Bart Simpson in my speech and the Adjudicator's name ended up being Bart. Weirdest shit ever.
Also the time an Adjudicator said I was eloquent. Little did she know I'm the biggest pottymouth on the planet.

I can do all three. No preference as to which one I get to be honest.

Evatt/Made BP Semis last year/That Scotch competition we were rekt in

Yeah, will plan to continue

When our second made someone from the other side cry (this was when we were in Year 8).

I just remembered the time my friend cracked it at a parent from the other side who was sitting in the audience for 'smirking' at her. This was in the middle of her speech. Out of nowhere she was like 'I dont know why you are making faces at me and laughing but can you please stop' and said some other rage stuff then continued on in her speech. I only realised later what had happened, I think everyone else was like wut too.

Unfortunately won't see you guys in the finals, lost to MLC tonight.

Disappointing but they deserved to win and it was fairly adjudicated :/

See you in university :)

Any chance of going to finals with only 4/5 wins?
We screwed up one but we won all the rest by margins of 3-7 points.

Possible. Only if every other team loses once then you will go through, otherwise it will be the team with five wins which will advance.

And Hamo, sorry for the bad news.  How did the debate go?

Not going to complain about the actual debate, we lost fairly.

Topic is a different story, but meh.

Ah, bad luck man. What was the topic for you guys, if I may ask? (Assuming I had a different secret topic for round 5 considering mine was like last term)

I'll be sure to eliminate MLC if we get drawn against them at any point in states ;) Speaking of which, does anyone know when states start or perhaps when all regions have finished their 5 preliminary debates?

That peaceful protesters should respond violently when met with a disproportionate amount of violence/force from the state.
