hi guys, im stuck on a question, it asks you to calculate the concentration of a dilute Benzoic acid which has a pH of 4.32 which I have done using the constant from the book now the next questions are
'Calculations involving weak acids usually involve the assumption that [acid]equilibrium=[acid]initially, since such a small amount of the acid ionises. however, for dilute solutions, such as this one, the amount of hydrolysis can be significant.'
Use this information as well as your (conc of benzoic acid from ph) to determine the concentration of the benzoic acid solution
Hence show that the percentage ionisation of the benzoic acid was significant
This question illustrates why % ionisation is not a good measure of acid strength. explain and suggest a better method for determining the strength of an acid.
Cheers
