Abbreviations?

Are we allowed to use abbreviations during the exam? for example HR, OH&S, LSO?
I've heard that we need to write the words in full the first time and then bracket the abbreviation. eg. Human Resource Manager (HR Manager), and we'll be able to write HR Manager throughout the answer?

Is this true? Or does this only apply to Economics? Thanks.

My teacher said it was fine...I think I saw in an assessors report an abbreviation and it was a high-scoring response, so it should be ok if you put it in brackets the first time  ;)
