Single or Double quotation marks?

Hey guys,
I usually use single quotation marks for quoting when writing my text response essay but my teacher says that it's wrong and I should be using double for all my quotes. Does it matter what type you use when quoting general quotes in the text response? because I only use double when I am quoting what someone said and the rest are single.

Cheers

I don't think it matters at all - whatever way you do it should be absolutely fine and shouldn't influence your mark at all.  But if your teacher says that, then do it for SACs.  For SACs, your teacher's word is LAW.

As bangali_lok said, it really shouldn't matter.
However, all my school teachers (some are/were examiners) were really pedantic about this. For quotes from the studied text, it must be double quotation marks.
And single quotation marks are used when quoting a critics review of the text for example, or something that someone has said about the text - generally you don't need this, but it comes up in the essay topic itself.

The most important thing is consistency. BUT, if you use single quotation marks, you might run into trouble when trying to paraphrase (often done with singles) or use sarc-marks (also singles) - how is your reader supposed to differentiate that from actually quoting? Also, if you use doubles and have a quotation within a quotation, the singles can be used for the inside quotation. Doubles are more standard for those reasons.
