Hey Guys/Girls,

I was just wondering if it's easy to achieve a 35+ in further?! As in i won't be needing to spend a lot of time studying for it?!

Thank you,

- Sammyboi ;)

It should be relatively easy, providing that you have a reasonable grasp of Mathematical concepts.  8)

However, DO NOT NEGLECT THE SUBJECT! You sound like someone who wants to put very little effort into the subject, which is fine as long as you keep up with your cohort. If you neglect the subject it will come and hit you in the face, hard  :(

So pretty much, for a 35-45 (approximate) study score, keep up with your class, make sure you understand the concepts and do a few practice exams. Then you can focus on your other subjects.

Have fun ;)

Getting a 35 in Further is definitely not an extremely hard task to achieve, as others have stated Further becomes truly competitive at the upper echelon of SS (45+) where losing 1 mark potentially means losing 1 whole study score.

Many of the concepts in Further 3/4 are at a year 9 level so if you found year 9 maths easy, that should be a great start. If you are currently undertaking methods and/or specialist and not having too much trouble then you should be confident for Further.

You definitely still want to do the work required even if its just half what you've been asked so you can have experience with all the concepts as there are some concepts which are unique to Further. Do take care to read questions carefully and do at least a few practice exams so you can get a feel for VCAA's tricks and the way they want you to answer certain questions e.g. how to 'describe a distribution'.

All the best for the coming year!

Yeah, okay sweet..

Just wondering if you have any tips and tricks for studying further?! As in like completing the homework the day you get it and then doing some practice exam questions on the content you've just learnt?!

Competing homework is an essential task, given by the school. I would say, you should go ahead with doing more complex stuff, based on your current topic, so you can have a better understanding in the future.

Homework won't take you long especially if you are considering only doing approximately half of the assigned work so you can move onto something else. Try to concentrate while doing the work so you can take everything in, don't have the mentality that Further is too easy as you may become prone to forgetting the content you've learnt. Math is very much a subject where you have to practice to get better at, reading the instructions in the textbook won't help you much.

In terms of moving onto exam questions, your textbook should have compiled a few exam questions at the end of the exercise/chapter for you to do. Application questions are important to practice as most of the exam will be application. If you want to advance a bit more, feel free to start doing the multiple choice sections of the module you are currently learning. This consolidates your knowledge and allows you to patch up anything you're missing, it also allows you to start familiarising yourself with the VCAA writing style and their tricks. You can probably ask your teacher to print them for you on the school budget so you can save some money :P.

Remember throughout your homework and practice to note down your common mistakes and tricky questions so you can look over them before the exam. Noting them down as you encounter them will be much easier than going back through your old exams and exercise book looking for them near the end of the year. Ultimately it is up to you how much of this you want to do as you only want to achieve 35+.

Hopefully this helped! Feel free to ask more questions :)

I would agree with Long here. Taking down notes and mistakes, will certainly assist, when it comes to improving at Maths. In my opinion, to achieve your goal (35+ in Further Mathematics), you should still be taking notes and do homework (essential part of school life), rather than believing in a effortless view, of several others. By simply doing your homework, you will be displaying, that you understand the topic to a certain degree, and preferably ask the teacher, a few questions, the next morning. While, doing some additional complex questions, you can simply be a few steps ahead of your class!

Good Luck :)

Definitely complete the set holiday homework which isn't likely to take you long. If you can, try to finish the whole module that you have been set so that you can start attempting the exam questions related to them. Then as you go through them, do what i advised in my previous post and note down tricky questions as well as your mistakes.

Feel free to ask more questions throughout the year :)
