Throwing a hypothetical scenario at the reader: say you were in a SAC or exam situation. The next question to appear on the paper was "sketch the graph of: y= 4 cos(2x) + 3 and asked to show all relevant intercepts and end points. The domain is [-2Pi/3, 2Pi]. This is a tech enabled question and worth 4 marks.

How many marks are allocated to the shape and look of the graph? My methods teacher since last year consistently tells me off for having "bad graphs" and says he won't even look at them. How does one get better at sketching any graph since I get dogged out for them too   :P ;D

Show relevant working out but a sketch isn't needed, just some tips on shape and flow which will help me.

P.s. I have done this question and many others but he probably won't mark them off as done  :'(. And how much should that question be worth? There's no horizontal shift or - to worry about

Thank you
For drawing (any) graphs, I work out intercepts and notable features first. Maybe it's obvious, but for some reason a lot my friends draw their graphs first and try and shoehorn their values in. Notable features generally include asymptotes, turning/stationary points, ending points (only sometimes) and anything else that isn't a feature of every graph. Generally you'll end up with a handful of points that you can mark out to work out the general shape. With trig graphs, I find it easiest to do it dot-to-dot style without taking the pen off the page, even if I don't know the exact coordinates of my pilot marks. Going slow won't kill you, but don't go too fast and don't draw a hairy graph because those are pretty dodgy.

Maybe it varies from school to school, but here it's one mark for accuracy of the line (Doesn't curve away from asymptotes, no branchy-offy bits from bad attempts, etc.) and the correct placement, with a half-mark penalty max unless you manage to draw the complete wrong graph.

Curious about how bad your graphs have to be that you get dogged for them though? Pics pls  ::)

Hey Beh :))

My graphs are actually pretty decent imo. I no longer draw the hairy looking graphs and follow through with one line through relevant points and rub out any lines that move off the planned course. He mentioned something about a large majority o the graph being undefined. What does he mean by that? I can't send a picture now but I'll send an example when I get home :)

I was adding anything and everything on my keyboard to make and example and get an answer for the question above it  ;) What I wanted to know was does VCAA want students to be able to manipulate what's given to them or hand them with nice turning out numbers. Wanted to know this for tech free tests

I just wanted tips for trig graphs in general  ;D not only sin. My example just happened to be a cos graph doe

A cosine graph looks exactly the same as a sine graph, just translated. Look at the graphs.

VCAA generally gives nice numbers for tech free tests. They're not trying to see if you can solve x^4 + 3x^3 + 2x^2 + x + 5 = 0 by hand (the solution process is awful btw)

Yep, pi/2 units to the right  :D. Just before reading this, the other day my teacher said the same thing when we were given a graph and told to only work out it's amplitude. Class was literally split in two with one side saying it was sin since it started at zero but on the other it finished at at a position greater than 2. After seeing us going back and forth he simply said, "can't it be both" and then said exactly what you said. :))

Also pointed out the it said only a section of the graph has been displayed. The graph, either sin or cos would've been or could've been dilated, translated, reflected etc.

Internet has been out for the last week and won't be back until Wed-Thursday so this is a much more spesh question, |zxn| (I think they're modulus signs) but how does one attain god like status in the realm of mathematics? I'm sure one does not simply just buy his way to success in maths, and I'm sure with your marks you could've become a doctor or lawyer.... This, when my internet connection comes back to life :p will become a ask the AN maths God part thread :))

I do genuinely want an answer doe, hope you read this.
P.s. Why are you up at like 1 or 2 o clock sometimes? Not being rude or anything just saw some if your answers (not really in this thread) appear to come pretty late at night  :-\

People keep thinking they're mod signs. They're not! They're l's! As in lower case L's.
And please don't say I could have become a doctor or lawyer with my grades. It implies that they're jobs everyone should aspire to get into, which they really aren't.

And seriously, all I did in high school was work on maths questions from the Essentials book for Methods and Spesh by myself. That's how I learnt VCE maths. Not in class. I worked out ways of understanding things that worked for me.

Why am I up so late? Because I'm on break still.

Ok... lzxnl
All I was aiming for was a little convo with an AN legend. I agree with you comment on the doctor and lawyer thing, they're the first things that pop into my head because it's my family's 'thing'. Didn't mean to sound rude or pushy to anyone. Why do I agree with you? Because my methods teacher got a ridiclious oh high ATAR score (ENTER, or something like that when he was in VCE), got into law, became a lawyer working for a firm and dislike it pathetic job.

After all that he went back to uni and completed a masters in teaching and became a methods teacher for a top tier private school. Hated that as well, thought the kids were too "snobby". He proved to myself and a 1/2 methods class why what you enjoy and not what others preview you should be is important. And he loves teaching regardless of when people compare his salary back in law to his teaching one.

Great to know, did the same thing about a week ago in methods and I felt great. Probably keep doing it now.

That's cool I guess.

Thanks for stopping by....

Yep, keep doing that. It'll take the pressure off you as you'll have less subjects to worry about. I didn't end up really caring about several of my subjects in year 12 because of extra work done before so I put all my effort into English Language.

And honestly it's ok. I'm not actually annoyed.

Once you get to uni, you probably won't have the same sleeping patterns as in high school. You've been warned :P

Threads been dead for a good nine days now, I've been pretty busy and my internet connections just come back online. I should be able to upload a a picture of a few of my graphs tomorrow (If anyone still cares about them) so I can receive criticism. I have, however started making sure my graphs are smoother etc. as suggested by Mighty and IzxnI. Thank you guys.

A bit of a subjective question(s): Has anyone's school/class finished vectors and circular functions? My specialist class just finished vectors (I'm still doing the vector proofs chapter, challenging) and we started circular functions.

How has your specialist experience been so far? Is anyone about to do their first SAC?

Anyone who replies will get my side too but I have and English practice SAC tomorrow and have to leave :)

Okay. Finally got some free time and decided to upload the pictures of the graphs.
Note, these were fixed up with what my methods teacher and mighty and IzxnI suggested. Criticism is beneficial here :)

Note, the question specified to sketch both graphs on the same plane and intercepts weren't required. Looking for criticism on the shape. And if someone is keen, please clarify how I find end points and where the graph crosses the x axis epically when it's shifted horizontally by Pi/4 in the positive x direction for example. Thank you

Edit: won't let me post the picture, it says it's too large. Any suggestions?

Did circular functions. Interesting stuff, but a bit grindy until the later parts when multiple concepts are combined and the questions actually get good.

We did a "learning activity", which was a SAC style thing. Pretty much the whole class got completely destroyed mark-wise (like, less than 50% average :o), because the questions were a lot harder than the textbook ones. I stood proudly with 9/20 and 11/20. Pretty confident that it didn't count for anything but I don't think anyone asked. It was a little bit funny though because everyone was trying to find out how everyone else did without revealing their own scores so they wouldn't look bad. ::)

I didn't consider imgur. Wanted to directly upload it on here from my photos  ;D I get to work on that
😂😂👌
Keep on keepin on Mighty. I espically like the fact that people want to know other people's marks but won't relenquish their own mark. Our teacher likes to start every double session with an exam type question. The average for a particular one we did recently (our first) was 1 mark  ;D ;D Out of 4

Edit: thoughts??
First one's good but a bit hairy, and the y-scale isn't immediately obvious. Second one's a bit iffy on the graph shape - not because I know how to draw a perfect sine graph but some of your peaks are narrower than others. Other than that I'd say you're alright - the erased lines are still showing though so try drawing them a bit lighter?

If I were marking that on a SAC I might give a half-mark penalty, but it'd be pretty easily disputed because it's kinda trivial.

I like that exam question thing, we kinda do that in methods. Except the homework is past exam questions that my teacher painstakingly dug out and reformatted so it's weekly instead of class-ly.

1/4 is pretty harsh, do you know what exam it was? I'm interested in giving it a shot :)
