Bachelor of Biomedicine Subjects

Hey all,
I was wondering if I intend to do the bachelor of biomedicine starting this year, is there any way I can avoid doing the first year physics or maths subjects without switching to bachelor of science? (considering I don't want to major in bioengineering systems/health informatics or do the GAMSAT)
Or is the "standard pathway" set in stone? :(
Thanks in advance! Sorry I'm such a noob

Hi there kiko98.

I'll also be doing the Bachelor of Biomedicine this year! Unfortunately, both Mathematics for Biomedicine and Physics for Biomedicine (and its advanced equivalent) at set in stone. You cannot simply avoid them.

Just for your own understanding, you will still be required to do the GAMSAT to get into post-grad med if you're doing a Bachelor of Biomedicine. You don't get in through your marks and interview alone. As a result, it is inevitable that you will need to do Physics at some point as it is necessary for the GAMSAT.

If you choose to do the Bachelor of Science instead, keep in mind that there are equivalent subjects that you will need as prerequisites to get into the MD. (edit nvm the following!) These include prerequisite studies in 2nd year anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. I don't think you actually need to do physics subjects in this pathway, but it would mean you need to self-learn physics for the GAMSAT if you chose not to. Someone else more experienced with it should be able to clarify if this is right, though!

Thanks for the reply Alter!
Ah sad to hear, but I guess it is how it is :(
I'm not planning to continue onto post grad studies so I won't need to worry about the GAMSAT hehe but thanks for your concern  ;D ;D
Hope to see you around next year!

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from though. Originally I had cold feet about still wanting to do biomed because my maths and chem grades in high school were some of the weakest. However, I've just come to accept that I'm lucky enough to be learning these things and they're pretty cool anyway. If I'm going to do the subjects, I may as well give them my 100%. If it makes you feel any better, I have no history in physics at all and my biology knowledge only stems from what I've learned online (never did it in VCE!). I'm confident we will be given room to build up our foundations when we start up.

Ah, I misread this part in the OP! I thought you said you did want to do the GAMSAT, my bad!

Definitely! I think I might make a FB group for all of the newcomers tomorrow. It could help break the ice before we all jump into uni. :)

I might just add that pretty much all of the core subjects in first year are there for a reason because they help you to understand important biological concepts in second year, so don't be too quick to write those off as irrelevant or unnecessary. The only exception that comes to mind is the statistics subject you'll have to do, but as a student of science (and at a university where research is a core focus) it's an important skill to have regardless.

I say this because a significant majority of the first year cohort spend a lot of time whinging about those subjects (the key quip I hear is that "doctors don't need calculators") or they expect to be in hospitals and using stethoscopes or something. If you understand what biomedical science is all about, you'll be sweet. :)

I spend more time using the stuff I learned from stats in the course of my job than from any other 1st year subject, so it turns out to be worth it. Also I use a calculator at least once an hour :(

If you really don't want to do them, and don't want to do those aforementioned majors, then why don't you just do the BSci?

2014: BSci Hons (Microbiology/Immunology) at UoM
2015+: PhD (Immunology) at UoM

I must be the only one who liked stats lol

Thanks for all the feedback!
I was really worried about these particular subjects because I've heard so many negative comments, but these comments put my mind at ease  ;D ;D The outpouring of love for statistics is actually making me look forward to it....  ;) ;)
Guess I was too quick to judge haha, thanks again everyone  :D ;D :D ;D
