B.Biomed Core Subjects

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to know for first year Biomedicine (and planning on completing the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Major) are you allowed to Accelerated Mathematics 1 and Advanced Chemistry for BioSciences instead of the standard Chemistry for Biomedicine and Mathematics for Biomedicine, or are you bound to the core subjects as listed in the handbook?

AFAIK, all pathways for first year Biomed require you to do BIOL10002/3 and CHEM10006, so in that sense, doing Chemistry for Biomedicine is inevitable. The only way you can get past doing Mathematics for Biomedicine is if you do the 'Bioengineering Systems' pathway.

Pathway for students intending to complete the Bioengineering Systems major

BIOL10002 Biomolecules and Cells
BIOL10003 Genes and Environment
CHEM10006 Chemistry for Biomedicine
ENGR10003 Engineering Systems Design 2

Plus two mathematics subjects (choice depends on student’s background in mathematics), either both

MAST10006 Calculus 2
MAST10007 Linear Algebra

MAST10008 Accelerated Mathematics 1
MAST10009 Accelerated Mathematics 2

As SuperCell.27 has said, you can do Accelerated Mathematics 1 if you opt for the bioengineering pathway. Meanwhile, you can only get out of Chemistry for Biomedicine if you completed university chemistry in high school.

I had actually never heard of Advanced Chemistry for Biosciences until now, but from what I can see from the handbook it basically looks like a Chemistry for Biomedicine available to Science students.

If you really don't like the core subjects in first year, perhaps opt for the Bachelor of Science where you can tailor your first year as much as you want.
