Edit: more details added to the Timetabling section since I've had nothing but free time today ::)  screenshots will hopefully be added later tonight if UoM get their act together.

Just a heads up for the first years: if things aren't fixed before tomorrow then you'll have thousands of people trying to access the portal, so be patient. Don't refresh the page incessantly as this puts you at the back of the queue, and don't open multiple browser pages/tabs as this only slows you down. Apparently trying different browsers (Chrome, Explorer, Firefox, Safari) has worked for some people, but you might be one of the unlucky ones (like me ;D) who just has to sit and wait

Best of luck for tomorrow!

I'm panicking hard right now -- what the hell is this?!

edit: it won't let me upload the attachment so this is what it says
-------------------------------------------
Server Error in '/student' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

I can't look at my study plan or anything, and I haven't chosen any Semester 2 subjects yet (not of my own choosing, it was because it kept saying 'no more than 25 points of enabling electives') :S

Don't worry - I've got that too.

Hopefully it's because they've taken down the whole site to prepare for tomorrow when registration opens at 10.

You won't be able to select classes for your Semester 2 subjects anyway, though. This round of registration is just for your Semester 1 classes, so don't worry :) You can go back and add or change stuff in your study plan later.

thank you Lauren!

my friends (from different courses) were able to enrol in Semester 2 subjects though :(
So there are no penalties for not having any Semester 2 subjects at the moment right?

You can (and should) enrol in Semester 2 subjects (as in, put them on your study plan) sometime in February, but you won't have to register for classes for them until a month before Sem 2 starts.

There aren't 'penalties' exactly, but if I recall correctly, you won't be eligible for some of the 'full year uni student' perks like yearly concession cards and will have to apply for semester-long ones, which might cost more. But you're allowed to just fill your study plan with random electives for now, then withdraw in May or so and enrol for the subjects you actually want to do :)

ok so I stuffed up big time and didn't log into class registration until far later than 10am today. As a result 4 of the classes I wanted were unavailable and I had to settle for a couple of bad times. So basically I have to make about 6 changes on the 19th :( although I do know exactly what classes I want to add. I know this is a very tough question to answer, but do you have any idea how quickly that last 20% of placements fill up? Like if they add 4 places or something for a class, will they be gone within minutes? And what should if I do if I miss out on spots after that?
Thank you, love your work!

It can be hard to tell when places fill up, as over time people will also swap subjects etc which will then free up more subjects. I've found in the past they do fill up but nowhere near as fast as the initial timetabling, maybe over a few hours? Again it really depends on how happy everyone else is with their timetable.

So I have some issues doing my time table. I am a biomedicine first year student and it seems that the only lectures for biomolecules and cells is at 8 am... (I can't choose my lecture times for my cores is this normal for biomed?)
Would it be possible right now if I were to change this core subject for another one and hope that the lecture times are better?
If I withdraw from subjects right now would I lose my spot?
Oh and one more thing. What if all of the spots for the tutorials and pracs are filled up? What happens then?
THANKS (sorry for the many questions  ;D)

You're in the exact same position as literally every first year biomed student. The lectures for mast/biol/Chem are all locked in place and there aren't other options.

If a lecture clashes with another tute or prac, don't worry. Go to the tute or prac as the lectures are all recorded. Most students will have to do this at least once, so you're not alone.

Why/how would you withdraw from the core subject? It's compulsory and everyone doing biomed has to do it.

There are enough prac and tute spots for everyone in biomed. Individual sessions with good times will be the first to go, however.

Hope this helps :)

is it okay to miss 2 tutorials?
I have a prac that runs for 2 weeks that clashes with one of my tutes. I've tried to undo this by rearranging everything but it just made it worse and resulted in more clashes so this is my only option (I could withdraw from the subject of course but this is a compulsory one, can't do it next semester because I need to do other stuff then that only runs in Semester 2)

Check the attendance requirements. Classes that list tutorial attendance as a hurdle requirement will usually only let you miss 2 or 3 per semester without a valid reason. So if attendance isn't marked, then you've got nothing to worry about, and perhaps just email your tutor prior to the weeks you miss to check if there's anything important you need to know. If attendance is marked, you could go to your student centre and see if they could sort out an exemption form for your absences (-I'm not sure if they can do this, but if you've really got no other choice for these subjects then they might be able to help).

In Arts the rule tends to be you have to attend 80% of tutorials, so if there are 12 of them (one per week) then you have to attend 9 but can miss three, though there are a lot of subjects that won't run tutorials in Week 1, meaning you have to attend 8 and can only miss 2. I'm not sure what the rules for Environments subjects are, so check with the handbook for your unit.

Or you could just make sure you attend every other tute for that subject so that you fulfill the attendance requirement, and let those two weeks be your two absences. This'd be the easiest route since you don't have to bother with admin or paperwork, but it means you might find yourself in a tricky situation later if you get sick or something happens that prevents you from attending one day and you've already 'used up' your quota of unexplained absences. But in that situation, it should be fairly easy for you to acquire a doctor's certificate or some other documentation that lets you out of it.

I'd say just leave it be - if you're worried about missing out on content, email your tutor or chat with them about your predicament and maybe they'll give you some work or readings to make up for it, and if you're worried about meeting the hurdles for your subject, check what the requirements are and chat to the student centre about an exemption if the need arises :)
