Hi All,

Just a general question on essays:

Should I directly answer the question in the first sentence of my introduction and then get into my thesis  and subthesis or should i do my overall thesis first and then answer the question later and throughout my intro

I'd say it depends on the person! I think Emily, our English lecturer, recommends question first. I personally found it easier to do question second - Go with your gut!! Really, as long as it is answered the difference will be minimal ;D

Hey just wanted to ask, so for the question The focus in the intellect and the use of wit in Donnes poetry and W;t suggests that both composers were aware of the harsh realities of life. Evaluate this, statement with detailed reference to both your prescribed texts. This is a Module A essay question and i am not sure on how to answer this.

I think it is essentially asking how the composers present the harsh reality of life to their audiences, and how this is made clear through intellect in the two texts. So you might explore three 'harsh' things about life, how they are presented in an intellectual way through the use of techniques? :)

Hey for Mod C People and Politics, do we have to refer to the composers representation of his characters, or can we also speak about the character representing himself
"e.g. Hal portrays himself as a skilful politician through his quick alternation between prose and verse during his court rehearsal with Falstalff"
or do we have to speak about it in terms of
"Shakespeare represents Hal as a skilful politician through his..." blah blah blah

Always the second one unless the character is also the composer (EG -  a memoir or speech): Characters are puppets! ;D

Hi,

In regards to Module C: Representing People and Landscapes with de Botton's Art of Travel, just wondering if anyone has some tips on how to integrate quotes from across multiple chapters into one paragraph (as the notes from the makrer centre hinted at band 6 students should be doing)?

Thanks so much!  :)

I think the trick is not referencing the plot, which is retell anyway. So the structure becomes:

The use of TECHNIQUE in QUOTE shows us __________. Similarly, the use of TECHNIQUE in QUOTE shows us _______.

So it is just jumping from one to the other, and if you aren't referencing plot then these quotes can come from anywhere! ;D

Hey!

That sounds like a really good premise, you can probably look at Oppenheimer's speeches because that would really enhance your response if you reference a few of his lines. He was involved in the Manhattan project which eventually led to the deployment of the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and similarly dealt with the struggle of reconciling that nation's militaristic strength, with his own moral compass.

I think it is better to focus on the moral side of things because it adds complexity, both in the characterisation it allows you to develop, but also in the way you can tick off a lot more of the rubric that way. I think  anything could made into a symbol, which I know is a fairly unhelpful thing to say. I've read through your piece and I think you could definitely make a candle your symbol. Why? Because it's not unusual to have one at dinner and it's fire, so there's your link to the bomb. You could have it slowly melting away as their conversation gets more and more heated, and then at the end of the night, he blows it out (after coming to his conclusion). You may have to rewrite bits of the final scene because you already have a fire... but this is just the first thing that came to mind.

Sorry if that suggestion seems really lame :I , let me know if you have any ideas, and maybe we could discuss them too?

Actually that's an incredible idea, something I would have never thought about! I'll try editing it tonight before I go to bed, but it was extremely helpful! I'll try and find an Oppenheimer quote or two to make my work more relevant. I was initially inspired by both him and Alfred Nobel, which makes it even better.
Thank you so much!!! 😊

I think she's sticking with Paper 1 since you have to write separate questions for every option in Paper 2, and that's tough when you've only studied the one ;D

From what I've heard on atarnotes, I think it's recommended to answer the question first and then launch into your more generic thoughts about discovery. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Thanks so much,

I just had a read of some essays on here and externally and the majority of them seemed to answer the question in the first sentence

potentially a silly question, but how do you write an effective conclusion? mine always end up being a one-two sentence restatement of my thesis/introduction and I receive comments that it's not strong enough - what else should I be looking to include?

I am by no means an expert, but I do do averagely good, so my advice is to summarise the main points of each of the paragraphs and give an overall view of your arguments, then sum up with a final statement that links your whole discussion back to the question and/or to the world. Also, In a evaluate question or any other question where you have to make a judgment I suggest doing just that. Eg. Therefore we can see that hamlet demonstrates an incredibly high level of textual integrity
Hope that helps

Can someone please confirm for me  ;D
For poems you use quotation marks for the title of the poem eg: "Late Ferry"
And for film and books you underline the title

Or do you underline for both?
pls help!

Oh really, is it? I've been underlining for everything. So for sonnets from the Portuguese would I underline or quote it, since it's the name of the sonnet series not the poems themselves?

Hey! Basically the module is asking you to explore how techniques are used to represent political ideas, there is a bit of a guide on Module C here ;D

Is there anything specific about the texts' themes that you aren't clicking with? Any specific essay questions that have thrown you? :)

In reality the markers don't really care a huge amount - I think I underlined everything in some of my essays, quoted everything in some others. You won't gain or lose marks either way as long as titles are indicated somehow (though Jess' convention is probably the neatest) ;D
