Hey guys, i am finding it hard to cut down my essay word limit so i can write it in 40 min and was wondering if anyone had any hard core ideas on the best way to do this in order to not lose any marks from what you decide to cut out.

Thank you everyone :) :)

Hey there,
I remember when I was at Emily's English lecture she recommended getting rid of 2 words per line to try and cut down, so maybe have a go at that? Other than that, sometimes I cut down by getting rid of a quote that isn't as important as the other quotes. Usually I do three quotes per text but sometimes when I'm feeling a bit extra I may include one or two extra quotes and then my essay becomes too long. So maybe prioritise which quotes capture what you're trying to say the best and then delete one if it's not the best piece of evidence.

Hope this helps!

Just to add onto Olivia's answer...
Try and memorise as much of it as you can before the exam. That way you cut down on the amount of thinking you need to do under timed conditions and you remember more of your essay.
Also can vouch for the effectiveness of Emilys recconmendation as in my essays i would use extra adjectives. For example: blah blah blah Dramatically highlights.....
By cutting out the dramatically, i am still 100% gettiing my point across. I would do this every like twoc lines so the cutting down thing really helps!
"Live life like a pineapple. Stand tall, wear a crown and be sweet on the inside"

"May you grow up to be righteous; may you grow up to be true. May you always know the truth and see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong"

"Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire"

I have a similar question about cutting down words. I have to do a 5 minute speech for module C, so I can probably only write 800 words max instead of 1000 - 1100 which is what I have been doing for other essays. The teachers still seem to expect the same detail (and my teacher told us its not her job to cut out words for us ???), but I don't know what I can cut out to achieve this time limit. Would it be ok to only have one slightly longer paragraph for my related text? Could I just use 2 quotes but use 2 techniques for the one quote or something like that to make my analysis more condensed? Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

Hello,
Im doing King Henry IV Part 1 as my prescribed text for mod c and was thinking of doing Donald Trump's inauguration speech as my related text.
Im not sure if I should use it though,
any other related text that would be good for King Henry ?
why study for english when you can waste all your time on ext 2 and still underperform.

“female bad characters can also act as keys to doors we need to open.”

Is this a simile or metaphor?
(although it uses 'as', I'm not sure if it is in the context of a simile...)

In my notes for this speech I have it as a metaphor, as she is saying bad female characters ARE keys to doors (not 100% sure though)
It is also part of a motif with the quote at the end, "Many doors stand ajar; others beg to be unlocked."
Hopefully this helps :)

Hey! Just spotted this question. Cutting words without cutting analysis is definitely a super difficult thing. One slightly longer paragraph for related is okay, but balance is a good thing if you can get it!

- Using two techniques for one quote is a great call, you should do it as often as possible
- Cut every possible bit of story/plot detail and character description, it is amazing how much the words can drop once this (totally unnecessary) stuff is axed!
- Be more colloquial, it is a speech after all! So instead of saying, "the composer's use of metaphor in this quote demonstrates the immense impact that discoveries can have on the individual," say, "Discoveries are a big deal! We know this, and we see it in the metaphor..." Use the medium as a way to trim words and add audience connection.

You are struggling with something that almost everyone struggles with, keep chipping away, you'll make it work I am sure :)

Thanks Jamon, this is really helpful advice for a speech! I'll see what I can do :D

I have two quick questions about a Mod C related text.

I'm studying Auden for People and Politics and was thinking of choosing the poem America by Allen Ginsberg as a related. Is this risky as it is a poem (same form as Auden) and is the same poem I'm using for ext 1 after the bomb?

Lots of love to anyone currently doing trials! x
