How hard is it to get an HD?

I'm starting my Bachelor of Science this year and was wondering how difficult is it to get an HD in CHEM10003, CHEM10004, MAST10006, MAST10007, PHYC1003 and ENGR10003 given that I achieved an ATAR of 95+ last year?

If anyone has done any of the subjects above, could you explain how you went about achieving the best score you could get?

The bold part is completely irrelevant - and I feel the need to point this out now, because I know too many people who fell into the trap of, "oh, but I got ATAR xxyy last year. I can easily do well this year!", who then proceeded to fail all of their units. Your ATAR is not a good indication of your uni learning, my recommendation is to forget it altogether.

As for trying to get a HD average - look, it's not easy, but doable. They say you can get a distinction simply by putting in a constant effort, but the difference between a HD and a D is a lot bigger than you'd think by looking at it. You will need to hand in every piece of assessment, and pour your heart into them. You will need to be the guy that hands something in hoping to have picked up every mark. You will need to actually study during SWOTVac, and do your best to complete the whole exam, read over it a couple of times, and not just finish and quit it.

Thank you, I just though I would add my ATAR to give you a rough idea of how much effort I am capable of putting in. I appreciate your answer nevertheless.

During university exams do you often get enough time to go over and check your work? Or are you usually rushed for time?

Depends on the person - I have a few friends who barely finish by the skin of their teeth, but I've found that I can finish EVERY exam (bar 1 second year maths exam, grrr) with time to spare. In fact, I usually leave the exam early, but I'm not particularly looking for a HD average, so. :P

its impossible to get HD's in those subjects because they dont give out HD's at melbourne

the highest grade you can get is a H1 which is a score of 80+ and in general it is pretty achievable in any subject to break the H1 barrier provided you study consistently and put in maximum effort into every piece of assessment including assignmetns and little tests and shit worth 5% of your mark. in general if you put in the amount of effort to get a >95 atar into your university study, you will likely have a H1 average. treat every piece of assessment in uni like a sac and study properly in swotvac and you should be all g
