Question about study score [For friend]

Well my friend asked me today something which I'm not sure of, does anyone have any ideas?

Last year (year 11) he did music 3/4 solo performance and like me he got a 42 with A+ A+ A+. However at that time he wasn't sure how the VCE system works and stuff and accepted his study score. However he says that he knows someone who got a 43 in music 3/4 solo with a A A+ A+. So he suspects maybe the examiner or something might have made a mistake calculating his study score. Is there any way to verify this? [Because VCAA do make mistakes...] And is it still possible to get a statement of marks (at the end of this year) even though he is in year 12 now for a 3/4 subject he did in year 11?

First of all are those scores in the same year, because if the scores are in different years, then thats ok as your scores are ranked and clearly the performance in a different year was weaker

However I'm assuming this was in the same year he did his subject. The main reason for this is the guy with 43 probably got a high A, High A+ and a mid A+

Meanwhile your friend probably got a Low A+, Mid A+, Low A+

Hence when you calculate their two percentage scores, the other guy would've had a higher score hence he gets the better study score.

One important thing to note is that an A+ means you got in the top 10% of people. It doesn't mean you got 90% or higher, it's just where you were ranked for that assessment.

Hope this clears a lot up for you

Ahh I see thanks, so can he still get a statement of marks to check how much he lost?

I'd go with jimmy999's explanation as it's by far the most likely. However as you said, VCAA and VTAC actually do make mistakes. I still remember seeing someone last year on the results thread showing their VTAC page with a subject being doubled up, allowing them to have a higher aggregate and hence ENTER than they should have had. Automation has it's problems I guess, but they're quite rare.

Mmm... remember Odette as well? They completely missed one of her subjects when they calculated her ENTER the first time around... it was one of her top 4 as well, so when they added it in, her ENTER jumped by about 10 points or something...

Yeah I read about that, so how do you find out if this is a mistake or not? Because my friend is quite pro and he thinks he did really well in the exam and performance so...

I'm not sure whether you can still get a statement for last year given it is getting to 10 months since results came out but if he can and is uneasy about it then he should at least get a statement for peace of mind.

But in general, the reason A A+ A+ = 43 and A+ A+ A+ = 42 is basically because of what jimmy999 said. Like /0's example of A A+ A+ = 48, you can still get a higher SS than a lot of straight A+ people if your A+s are high and your A is a very high A.

Pretty sure a lot of people think that :P

I think it's a little too late to listen to the audio recording of his performance exam:

What is available for inspection
All written exam papers and audio tapes for Music performance exams may be made available for inspection.

Deadlines and destruction of scripts
The final date for lodging requests to inspect a June 2009 exam script is Friday 18 September 2009.
The final date for lodging requests to inspect an October/November 2009 exam script is Friday 5 February 2010.

I think after a few months they destroy all exam papers and tapes etc. Tell your friend to call up VCAA if he really cares that much, but I think it's too late to do anything. A A+ A+ = 42 is a perfectly normal score to get, as jimmy999 said.
