Is doing 7 subjects in vce stupid?

(Because of my 7th subject not being counted)

Hi guys, I'm a year 11 students currently doing 2 year 12 subjects.

Year 12 subs: further, texts and traditions
Year 11 subs: english (obviously), chemistry, computing and methods

Most students in my school don't score very well in texts and traditions (TT), which is worrying me. I'm fairly strong in mathematical subjects and was thinking, for TT if I get a SS which I am disappointed in, should I just do spesh next year? I spoke to a few people who claimed if I'm planning on doing that I should just drop TT altogether because I'm wasting my time while others told me if I only have 4 subjects in year 12, I'll be able to manage my time properly.

Ps- I believe I'm strong in TT (scoring above average in my SACs) but think the exam won't have the same result- this has happened to many strong students I know. Also, I prefer maths over anything, so this is kind of my excuse to do it :')

Hey there, if you look at my subjects I am also doing more than the usual 6 subjects. I'd say it depends on what you need(especially if you did poorly in something). Me for one, Im doing the extra subject because my methods score wasn't up to par last year and doesn't make it easy to get me the ATAR I need. I was reluctant to enrol in health as my 7th subject but, man am I glad! It's been my favourite subject so far. However, it does make it much more difficult to find time to study for each and every subject, which is where prioritising comes in. But I realise I'm probably one of the only people who did this many subjects, and on top of that my VCE has been spread out over 3 years instead of 2 (yr 10,11,12) so hopefully someone else can add to this :)

Thanks for sharing Mellyboo. Tbh my first choice for my 2nd subject was health which I chose bc the stereotype of it being easy (have no idea if this is true) but then I realised, it doesn't interest me; hence I have a higher chance of not doing well as I won't enjoy the subject. After that, I began thinking about spesh and realised it fit all my criteria (scales up and I enjoy maths). I'm just nervous about it being too difficult for me to do well in it next year

my friend did 7 subjects in year 12 (sounds crazy because it is :p) including UMEP, a language and methods and she still did really well so it just depends on the person, I think sometimes knowing that one won't count is good because it gives you a bit of leeway if you know that the exam didn't go well etc

Wow, this friend of yours must be genius!
Yeah, that last point you said really hits home, it gives the impression of kinda having a backup subject. Also, one can look at it this way; it's better to be safe than sorry ;)

I did 7 subjects in total (2 in year 11 and 5 in year 12). It's not compulsory at my school to do 5 subjects in year 12, but I chose to do it because:
a) i wanted to have a backup subject
b) if everyone else can do it, why can't I?
The 7th subject I picked up was biology and it ended up being my best subject and has also been a massive help in the first weeks of uni for me.
in your case, you've said that you really enjoy maths and all, I think spesh would be a really good option and if you do find it too hard or something during year 12, at least you can opt out and drop it.
(btw not sure if you know, even if you 50 all three maths, only two can count in your top four subjects)

Yeah I would add specialist maths always a great subject to do - very interesting and great scaling. Also 5 subjects isn't too crazy with 4 you will have a lot of free time.

I did 2 year 12 subjects last year, and am doing 5 this year as well.
I had the option to drop one as well, but I decided it was worth picking up the extra subject as a backup.
Most other students do 5 subjects in year 12, it isn't really too much to handle.
You can always start off doing 5 subjects in year 12 and then drop the one you least like. That's what I planned to do, but ended up loving them all!
I'd suggest starting off doing 5 next year and then picking later whether you'll drop one. You have until the GAT to decide :)

I did 8 subjects altogether. Was not a pleasant experience in terms of workload and 2 got discounted lol. But I liked what I was doing and wanted to learn more. Honestly speaking, doing extra subjects is only recommended if you screw up a y10/11 accelerated 3/4. Otherwise just be wise with your choices haha :)
