Guide here that lists some topics and contains some general hints.

What exactly do you want to look at in terms of immigration detention? Do you want to just argue that it's wrong and that Australia/ the govt. needs to design a more effective, more humanitarian means of processing refugees? Do you want to look at societal perception of refugees as a whole? Do you want to discuss the realities of the detention centres and what, specifically, needs to change in those places?

See if you can turn that topic into more of an argument (ie. X is good or X is bad) and from there, it should be easier to flesh out your ideas :)

Best place to start when looking for an oral topic is here: 2016 Oral Topics

If nothing pops at you (didnt check to see if there was anything about immigration detention), you could also consult Lord Google and read up on a few articles (published post September obviously) and there should be some aspect of the issue that they address that you wanna discuss.

Personally, I did "As a developed country, Australia has a responsibility to increase its refugee intake" after the whole Syrian refugee stuff overseas and our own draconian "Stop the Boats!" policy after I read up on some articles about these cute little kids who had been displaced from their homes because of civil war in Syria.

I originally went in thinking I wanted to discuss something immigration related and the whole refugee thing just popped out at me.

So basically: read a few articles and something should pop out at you as something you want to discuss cuz you wanna choose something you're passionate about and interested in because those speeches are always the most engaging.

Good luck!

hi guys, thanku so much for the replies!!

i forgot to mention earlier that my teacher said don't do "immigration detention should be illegal" because it's too broad and she said narrow my focus? for ex. should doctors be intervening and such

so i was thinking of doing "immigration detention of children should be illegal" but i'm not sure if the arguments are strong enough :/

I feel like doing "immigration detention of children should be illegal" is less broad than what your teacher said not to do but it may still be regarded as being still too broad. It is ultimately up to your teacher so you may want to clarify with him/her. If they say it's okay, then it's okay.

To build on your current line of argument and hopefully help you make things more specific, fill in the following blanks:

'Immigration detention of children should be illegal because _______. Instead we should be _______ so that ______.'

Eg.
'Tax havens and illegal offshore companies should be abolished because they perpetuate inequality and only help the rich get richer at everyone else's expense. Instead, we should be supporting a heavily regulated corporate sector that prevents big businesses from exploiting tax loopholes so that we can create a future that is more economically egalitarian for all.
