Oral presentation speech writing. Urgent please help

Doing an oral presentation and the contention is "i believe there should be more media accountabilty". Need some ideas.

Firstly, break down your topic, and question it.

"I believe there should be more media accountability."

This is a statement. Ask Why? What are the reasons. These could include (but not exclusive of):

• The power of the media to influence the population
• Privacy policy of media outlets. (think Murdoch phone hacking scandal)
• Media telling lies, but people believe them

If you are arguing for this statement, I suggest you provide a rebuttal to an opposing argument.

Also, you may need to ask yourself these questions:

• Who is to hold the media accountable? Australian Media and Communications Authority?
• How are they going to be accountable?
• Will the person holding the media accountable have the resources to do so?
• Will the accountability person be biased towards the media outlets? If so, how are you going to solve that problem?

Use the questions above, and create a model to hold the media accountable.

I believe that primary school should be free because all children deserve a proper start in life regardless of their parents' circumstances so that they can reach their potential without monetary barriers standing in their way.

You don't actually have to use the exact sentence in your speech since it's a bit simplistic, but it should give you a broader framework to build your sub-arguments around

You tell me Why are those ideas connected? Why do you want to talk about the power of the media?

i.e. There needs to be more media accountability because the media has the power to influence people, which means that/ which could result in...(?)

How about this:

Media outlets should be held to accountability because they must be ethical in their practices so that the public are likely to trust them.

Remember the 60 Minutes kidnapping saga? Did you trust Channel 9 after that? I had a lowered opinion, personally, and thought that, ethically, they crossed a boundary

There are plenty of other examples out there to support this statement. But that's my suggestion; have a go at formulating your own response!

Absolutely critical thing you should be doing at this point is looking for opinion articles that deal with this topic. This is a very important topic, with countless articles available for free to read that will provide you with a breadth of opinions. Once you've done that, then you'll have the understanding you need to actually write a good speech.

Writing the speech is only half of the battle. Truly, the best speakers are those that take their time to form their views and refine their arguments before putting any of it into a speech.

I know from personal experience on this one, because I gave a speech a few years ago on this topic. Actually having a look at what others were saying first was enormously helpful.
