Hey guys it's your main man swagadaktal here.
I'm trying to teach myself interactions of light and matter in unit 4 of physics but I'm finding the textbooks horrible on multiple levels.
It's extremely time inefficient - my teacher would teach it much better and more more effectively but I want to get the course done slightly earlier so I can start doing some practice papers.
So.. Do you have any recommendations on how I should approach it? I've been reading through the heinemann book but tbh i dont feel like im gaining an insightful understanding of the topic. For some reason with this subject I'm finding great difficulty in doing so - whereas subjects like chemistry I can self teach extremely effectively. I don't think it's the nature of the subject but rather the awfully written textbook which makes me want to stab someone not pursue this path.
I also wanna call out Zsteve who taught himself the whole course -- so if you have any insight i'd love it <3 . And I'd love some from everyone else as well so.
So what should I do? Just go through heinemann textbook? It's not as bad as the others but it's still extremely time consuming when i compare it to the way my teacher explains the concepts. Is there a different way to do this?
Are there any external notes which explain this topic more efficiently and effectively?
Thanks,
Swagadaktal

I'd agree with you, the Heienemann textbook (along with Jacaranda) are pretty awful. Don't force yourself to read through a book you don't like, it will only kill your interest. Back then I just skimped through it, get the main idea and learned everything elsewhere.
As for the unit on Interaction Between Light and Matter, the book that I used to teach myself that is College Physics by Serway and Vuille, which also contain pretty much all the other Year 12 physics units and many more stuff in it. If you're planning to do further study in physics, or anything that needs physics like engineering, I'd highly recommend that book as it is very well written and comprehensive.
Definitely also check out on other books on Quantum Physics, which is what Interaction Between Light and Matter is mainly studying. My personal favorite is The New Quantum Universe by Tony Hey and Patrick Walters. When it comes to find self-teaching, the first step is finding the right resources.
I'm also working on a set of notes on this unit at the moment, but unfortunately it will not be ready in at least a few weeks.
Hope this helps!
