UniMelb Residential College Questions?

I recently went to the University of Melbourne Open Day to check out the colleges. I'm a self-confessed artsy-fartsy literary type, interested in creative writing and philosophy, but I am looking for a fun and inclusive social scene.

When I went to the Open Day, I got a really good vibe from Ormond, and it seemed they had a lot of artistic stuff going on which I'm definitely into (slam poetry, theatre, concerts). However, I have heard that it has quite a bit of elitism and uppity types which I really, really could not put up with. I also went to Queens, where we had a lovely girl who answered our questions but I didn't get a strong enough picture of what it was like.

Basically I'd just like to know an insider's view on Ormond or Queens, even if you go to another college, I'd love to know what you know about it, or what other colleges seem like a good fit . Many thanks!

Hello there :) I'm from Newman and I think it will be the perfect place for you! You mentioned that you're interested in philosophy and the arts, and we have philosophy sessions as well as soirees and theatre productions that you can take part in. There is also a book club, and a student publication you can write for :)

I just joined Newman this year, and the people I have met so far are all really awesome and fun-loving people. Its also a really inclusive community so you'll definitely belong here!

some of my best friends live at ormond, and i reckon ormond has alot of people who if you dont know them, you might assume to be uppity or elitist, but they are actually perfectly pleasant. people tend to immediately categorise wealthy private school kids as snobby, without actually giving them a chance. the people are ormond i've met are all absolutely great, and i have friends who stay there who are from financially disadvantaged, ESL backgrounds (there on scholarship), and theyve felt no exclusion or discrimination LOL so i wouldn't really worry about that at all
