best engineering stream

Hi, I am currently a first year student and deciding whether to major in civil or electrical engineering. I am really interested in circuits and computers, however i have heard that electrical engineering is extremely difficult and there is a very high drop out rate (60% i heard). Should i pick civil, for it being more easier and having higher job prospects in Australia? I am not too fussed about the pay of either profession, but it is a factor.

Hey, I'm actually in a similar predicament to you, only with mechanical instead of electrical. In third year atm but still yet to decide one way or another. Personally I'd say if you're in two minds at the moment, pick up the core subjects for both majors in second year. Some second year subjects like Eng Mech and Eng Maths are cores for both Civil & Electrical, and you don't need to finalise on a major till the start of third year with engineering. Use the MSE website to find out exactly what subjects you need to do. First year unfortunately doesn't give you a very broad idea of any of the majors. So after having finished second year, have a look at what you're more interested in, and whether you can handle the extra difficulty of Electrical as Civil really is pretty straightforward in comparison.

Pick whatever you enjoy more
Judging by your description I would recommend electrical
Engineering is a difficult field to begin with and the only thing that can drive someone forward is interest and motivation
If you pick a field just cus you find it to be a little easier than you won't be enjoying your subjects nor Would you enjoy working in the future
And because you won't be enjoying what you're doing. Then chances are that you won't be doing that great either

Sorry I am a bit late to the party, but if we go on the description above i would definitely choose electrical engineering although there is a high drop out rate. True, it is a very demanding course from what ive heard but nothing im sure you cant handle :)

Having said that though, i had quite similar interests to you and looked into mechatronic engineering. It is a combination of mechanical, electrial and software/computer engineering. I had it in my head to that because that seemed to suit me the best. Then i dropped maths and chemistry and all hope for them went with them. I woulf definitely recommend look into mechatronics. It seems to be awesome and i wish i could do it, but im not that physics minded.

Dont do civil if you dont think youll enjoy it. And tbh, i dont think you will because there is not that much circuits and computers involved in civil engineering.

Im not at uni yet so cant provide first hand experience, but i hope i helped nevertheless! Thanks :)

How did you go with the issue of
MCEN30018: Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
And ENGR30002: fluid mechanics

You can only get credit for one of them
So which one did yu do
I had the same issue as you so I had to decide at the start of this year

Emailed the coordinator and applied for an exemption QUADRATUS. Also, what is up with that guy who's downvoting everyone lol?

Taken care of :)

In addition, Edward, I'm a 2nd year electrical engineer at UNSW, I'm happy to answer any questions about the course content if you have them ;D it's definitely a tough course, very mathematical, but if you are interested in the content it gets you through ;D

Cheers mate,

I see from your profile that your a tutor/lecturer, but how do you manage your time between your studies and lecturing/tutoring? Also, how do you go about getting work experience for engineering as it is vital for employment?

I probably need a bit of work in that first department to be honest, my time working probably outweighs study which isn't great :P my tutoring/lecturing etc etc, all my work stuff, probably takes about 25 hours a week altogether. During the ATAR Notes lectures, significantly more (RIP WAM).  I probably get only 15 hours of extra study a week on top of uni; most of which I do at night (I'm a night owl, so I happily stay up working on stuff until 1am). I try and set 1-2 hours a night to do extra uni stuff, which works pretty well for me! Then I do extra stuff on weekends as appropriate :P

Engineering work experience, I got lucky with. I'm on a Coop scholarship, and my scholarship office takes care of that for me. I have 1.5 years of work experience integrated into my degree as part of the program, for example I worked at a small Engineering company in Sydney over the summer. I take a year off from uni in 2018 to work full time ;D but it's literally just about getting in touch with absolutely every company you can to find out about opportunities. Your student office might have a list of potential companies who take on interns :)
