The telescreens were influenced by Orwell's worry over the technological advancements during the war.
Stalin, Mussolini, Franco - all political dictators during his time

Some good contextual references would include:
- Propaganda displayed through Big Brother (resembling Stalin)
- Growing fears of a totalitarian political structure post WWII displayed through the way the Inner Party control the Outer Party.
- The tortuous methods which used to make Winston conform (used by O'Brien) are similar to the ones Stalin used to make others believe propaganda (I'm not too sure about this one though)
- The way Big Brother is portrayed through large posters. This makes him seem Christian-like / god-like and resembles how Stalin was represented in Russia by displaying large pictures of him in the streets (again, not 100% sure on this one, read about it a while back)
