Style of lang analysis

Hey for a single article (or even two articles), would it be better to do it chronologically or thematically?

Is it ok to use examples that arent in order of the piece?

for example, if u're talking about connotations in one paragraph, could you take adjectives from all over the article? and so on...

thanks  :)

Of course it's ok. I personally find it more difficult to write in the latter style as it requires more planning, however the chronological method means less time planning which translates to more time writing. In saying that, you have to be careful when you're doing it chronologically because sometimes it can seem like you're simply listing - obviously not good! You have to be able to recognise techniques and what not mentioned again (or at least inferred to), and in that way it shows your understanding of how the author builds up his argument (I guess in this sense, thematic seems the better choice structurally...lol) But I guess do whatever you find easiest.

Teachers often say it is better to do it in the order in which the techniques appear, in say that, when you come across a repeated technique or phrase for example, do not talk about it again, talk about the repition when you first mention it. Then you avoid the listing of techniques.

Thematic also avoids repetition that might occur if you do it chronologically.

If your going to do it chronologically, definitely make sure that you read the article in its entirety before you start to write about the techniques used. Many students fall into the trap of trying to read as they write

what are the results of those traps? (ie. what/how do they write?)

nah i more mean you can get caught out if you do this.. like if you state the contention of the article before having read it all, and it may be incorrect after reading the whole article.
That make sense? Just dont do it. :P
