(1/1)
lyinghound:
Hey Guys I'm just wondering if I got get tips/advice for exams.
I'm having trouble with structuring my responses to questions like
"Evaluate the importance of revolutionary ideas and leadership among the third estate in 1789 as a cause of the revolution. In your response, refer to other sources and other views"
Any tips would be great. was well as this I'm having trouble finding historians views and quotes to incorporate as none seem to be based on that particular topic. I have difficulty using quotations in general really.

I personally have no idea what you're talking about because I do the Russian and Chinese Revolutions but... I can help with quotes! :)
I know the struggle of trying to find quotes about a particular topic but keep in mind that anything in your textbook is fair game- find a fabulous phrase and then either check the footnote for the historian's point of view or, if there is none, just quote it as the author's POV. Also it can be paraphrased or a primary source since the instructions are 'other views'.
As for incorporating quotes, in Year 11 I just worked on developing some go-to 'fill in the blanks' type thing (take that phrasing with a grain of salt, please no one yell at me ;D ).
What I mean are phrases such as:
As argued by X, 'blah blah blah' the...
As acknowledged by X, 'blah blah'...
As X contends, the revolution was largely a cause of 'blah'.
Basically just remember synonyms to 'argued' and embed the quotes, as far as I can tell this is perfect. (Just make sure it doesn't get too convoluted :) )
I'm happy to post some examples for structure but they would be very confusing because they'd be for different revolutions... (also I am just a wee little student so they might not be very good structurally)

For this question, I would start by saying to what extent you agree with the prompt. (E.g. leadership and revolutionary ideals among the third estate contributed significantly to the French revolution.) Then provide explanation, such as including specific leaders of the 3rd estate e.g. Mirabeau & Desmoulins, as well as talking about the revolutionary ideals they reflected in their actions. You could also talk about significant pamphlets such as Sieyes' 'What is the 3rd Estate?'. Dont forget to include references to the sources provided, helping to support your explanations. My teacher also taught us that we should suggest other causes of revolution by saying, while (event/idea) is a major cause of the French Revolution, (event/idea) also highly contributed to the revolution. As for quotes, these can be embedded throughout the whole response agreeing with the sources and your explanations. Also, opposing views can be used when suggesting other causes. (E.g. While (historian) argues that (event/idea) caused the Revolution, (historian) counter-argues this by suggesting that (event/idea) was the main cause.)
Hope this helps...
