Hey! All I can see is metaphor; obviously, they ARE the person they once were (they are still the same person), therefore this metaphor is used to signify change in outlook, personality etc. etc.

i don't know if this helps or if this is even a technique but its a reflective statement and I'm guessing there's a full stop at the end of that sentence and that is the whole sentence. so it would also be a simple sentence promoting a powerful discovery if this is for discovery haha hope that helps :))

You can talk about the following:
First person narration
Contrast of tense (am to was)
Person is also potentially metonymy as well :)

you could use negation for the use of "not" in your quote as well as first person narration for the "I"
