Underlining the name of your texts

Hey, so someone from another school told me the other day that we have to underline the name of a text in an English essay every time we mention it. Apparently if you don't you can lose marks??!! And apparently this is a known thing, but I have never been told this...what are everyone's thoughts on this? ???

Yep! Definitely need to underline your text; don't think you can lose marks over this one, but it will definitely avoid pissing off the marker!

This is only needed if a character in the book also happens to be the title.
Eg Richard III or "Richard III" (title) instead of just Richard III (character)
While it won't directly lose you marks, it could mean the marker is confused as to which one you mean, and you dont get properly credited for the awesome analysis you have done!

we've always been told you must put the text in quotation marks, ie "The Tempest". i haven't heard about underlining but since it's only going to take another second i may give it a go

I was always used to writing the title in italics rather than underlining it, but i guess it does work better identifying the text throughout your essay via underlining.
