Band 6 concern

Maraos:
Hi,
I'm a year 11 accelerate (technically in year 12 now but whatever..) and I've got my maths 2 unit exam this Friday.
I have literally spent the whole year just focusing on maths 2 unit because i really want to get 2 units out of the way and focus on 3 unit maths and my other subjects for year 12. I was pretty disappointed with my internal rank and overall mark. I got 89 for my internal mark and was ranked 13/85. I know it may not sound like a low mark (and its not that low) but for the time I put into maths I was very dissapointed. The main reason why i lost marks in my internals was due to silly mistakes (including handwriting losing 2 marks....). I was hoping to get a raw mark of 95+, would that still be possible?
And on a more broader question now that we are ranked how much influence does our HSC exam have? I know that it is supposedly worth half our mark but doesn't internal ranking kind of limit the influence it has on our mark because now i am destined to get the 13th highest mark in my whole school??

Thanks!

Firstly, look at the raw marks database. Historically a raw mark of around 85 aligns off to a 90.

If you want to get a raw mark of 95 in the exam then stop worrying about your cohort. A raw mark of 95 in the exam doesn't have anywhere to go and basically aligns up to 96 or 97 as is. That and the HSC exam makes up for a whole 50% of your final mark. It is weighted much more powerfully than any other task thus far. Indeed, internal ranks do play a role. But the more stronger your cohort is, the less impacted you are by what moderation on your rank can possibly do.

You said you ranked 13 on a mark of 89. That's hinting at the fact your cohort must be strong and everyone should be able to lift up each other's marks. Yes, internals make up the other 50%, but if your cohort is that strong and you're still in the upper end you are not going to be dragged down.

You've also acknowledged your lost marks, so you should have dealt with the reasons that cause them now.

Focus on your own work, and eye on the prize. Getting help is one thing, but ultimately only you can make your marks head in the direction you want them to. If you want to go that high then only you can get there.

(Although, seriously. Don't do what I did in Yr 10; think that you're nowhere near a band 6 because you're sounding like you're well beyond that 90 point mark.)

Thanks for the reply. Also i forgot to mention the differences in marks between the students in my cohort are very small. For example my friend beat me by 2 marks in total and is ranked 9/85. Does that mean that we will all probably get similar marks?

Externals - Who knows

Internals - Very likely, unless by some tragedy your external marks are that widespread which is not likely

Well after that exam i am estimating a raw mark of around 90-95. Do you reckon that would scale up? Since the exam was challenging.
