Hey Guys, I'm a little confused with the difference between Allostatic Load and Overload and when the HPA Axis activates, could someone please explain it? :)

Hey Guys, I'm a little confused with the difference between Allostatic Load and Overload and when the HPA Axis activates, could someone please explain it? :)

The HPA axis activates when:
  • stressor has not been removed
  • it is a prolonged stressor, chronic stressor

Allostatic Load basically refers to the overall negative effects of constant allostasis, wherein the body and brain experiences "wear and tear". Whereas allostatic overload is the point that represents when these effects develop into a serious health problem, for example a physical disease and/or mental disorder.

Hope that helped :)

Adding to what FatimaEl said - think of allostatic load as being on a continuum. Allostatic overload is the end point of the continuum, the point where stress can turn into a severe health problem.
