How to improve speed for language analysis?

I've read in other posts about people writing 1000+ words for language analysis in 45 minutes and I just can't understand how that is possible D:

It takes me about 5 minutes to highlight all the stuff I want to write about on top of reading time, and I also often stop to think about how to structure my essay like what to analyse next which really slows me down. I've definitely been able to finish language analysis essays in an hour, but only barely which leaves very little time for editing, and also it's only been about 800 words each time. Which I understand is sufficient but having no time to check over is definitely not ideal.

So I was wondering on how to be more efficient in this process? Should I be writing like non-stop for those 45 minutes? What is the recommended time spent on language analysis?

Thanks :D

Hi Mayonnaise,

I wouldn't be too concerned about writing your language analysis in 45 minutes, spending an hour on it is fine. This is only a matter of opinion, but I believe that leaving editing until you have finished all 3 sections is the way to go, because that way you don't run the risk of not finishing [I'd rather have 3 completed essays with small flaws than 2 and a half perfect ones].

In terms of speeding up your writing, I'd encourage you to spend at least 10 minutes of reading time analysing the stimulus. Have a quick glance at context and language analysis, pick your topic and then go straight to section C. In the last 2 minutes of reading time, make a mental checklist of what you are going to be discussing and as soon as writing time starts, scrawl a plan down very quickly (I wouldn't spend much longer than one minute personally). That way, if you thoroughly analyse the stimulus, you shouldn't be needing to stop and think throughout your piece as much and you'll find that helps you write significantly faster.
