Hi guys, i am planning to start Chemistry before term 1 starts next year however i do not know where to start.

Please give me any advice on what i should do before the end of these summer holidays.

Any advice will will be welcomed especially in these areas that i am very curious about:
-Any knowledge that i should know before starting Chemistry.
-Any difficulties that you have come across while doing this subject
-What type of homework i should do before Unit 1 Chemistry?
-How many hours per week did you study for this subject?
-What Chapters should i start from the the book called Chemistry 1 from Jacaranda?
-How did you study for this subject?
Thank you :)

Hi Guideme,

Here's my advice and reflections on some of the questions you have asked:

-Any knowledge required? I'd say not really, apart from brushing up on your equation balancing skills and maybe revisiting the different bonding types (metallic, ionic, covalent etc) if they taught you them at school, because Unit 1/2 chem will introduce new concepts to you (such as the concept of the mole, hydrocarbons, redox, intermolecular bonding and water) which I highly doubt they would have taught at a Year 10 level. I think the main issue is that not all Year 10 science curriculums are the same at every school.

-Any difficulties? Well, I guess the most difficult thing is trying to get your head around new topics which you probably have never encountered before. However, once getting used to them through proper understanding and homework questions, these difficulties were solved. Some of the topics that I had more trouble with than others when just starting to learn them in unit 1/2 would have been stoich, intermolecular bonding, redox (from the top of my head)

-What type of hw b4 starting? Not much. The most I'd suggest is reading ahead of the textbook, and maybe some of the questions, but since each topic is new, I wouldn't suggest doing too much, because you may end up confusing yourself. Help from the teacher is beneficial when you begin learning, so this is why I say these things.

-How many hrs/week? I treated this subject like my others. You'll have to get a feel for your subjects and see which that you may need to dedicate studying towards. However, a general guideline is that I would do my hw then read maybe 1 chapter(at most) ahead. I didn't worry about sticking to a specific schedule because tests and stuff don't line up in year 11 (year 12 they do tho)

-What chapters? I wouldn't know, I did the Heinemann Chemistry textbook. I'd suggest reading the first 5 chapters maybe? Read about Avagadro's and the mole if you have time.

-How did I study? A combination of taking thorough notes, ensuring that I properly understood chemical concepts, doing sufficient practice questions so that I was familiar with question types. However, ensuring that you actually know your theory is probably the most valuable advice that I can confer to you.

Hope these help, and if you have any queries, don't hesitate to ask further.
