You do the work!
Throughout the year, do the book questions and then test them on some exam style questions (from vcaa or other compnay prac exams!) And make sure you have a solid understanding, and not just a very superficial understanding. Further maths doesn't require a too in-depth understanding, because the course itself is fairly shallow. So it's about doing the vcaa exams and getting a solid understanding!

Hey Edwina! Welcome to ATAR Notes. ;D

I disagree with this part of your post. If you're "a reasonable math student", as you say, then you absolutely have the ability to 40+ Further. I think Swag's post above is a good one; after you initially learn the content in class, there's not much too it aside from repetition of questions. The more questions you complete, the more you'll 'get it', and the better you'll become.

I think, generally, Further has a fairly clear work to study score relationship. Work hard, pay attention in class, and you'll be absolutely fine. ;D (And also, if you don't understand something in class, ask. This seems like such a fundamental thing, but lots of people don't speak up when they don't understand something (because they feel like they should understand or whatever else), but that's the whole point of school!)

All the very best. :)

Hi there,
Honestly, if you really do want an above 40 study score, and work hard consistently throughout the year, I very much doubt you'll come out disappointed. Most of the content is relatively easy to grasp, so often the top 9% of students are separated by how well they've prepared themselves for the end of year exam. My advice would be to work at whatever pace you feel comfortable with, if you work faster than the rest of your peers, don't let them hold you back, but if not most classes should easily cover all the content throughout the year don't stress. Also try to ensure that you really understand why and how concepts covered work, not simply that they exist, as it can really benefit your understanding. Making a reference book as you go through the course is what I would advise, as I found this personally worked for me as it helped me consolidate the knowledge as I learnt it, but others prefer to do it before exams as revision. The most beneficial aspect I found however was exposing myself to as many practice problems as possible, preferably from practice exams, and documenting any mistakes I made for future reference, as by being aware of my past mistakes, I was less likely to make them again.

Basically, work hard, stay motivated, try to engage with the content material and try to avoid making repeated mistakes, as you will find many exam questions are simply variations of others, and you'll be well on your way of achieving your aims. :)

Hi Edwina!

I just completed Further in 2016 and I found the key was just attention to detail! A lot of other kids in my year who are better mathematicians and who out performed me in Methods typically didn't do as well as you might think in Further (at least from what I've observed) and I really think that was just due to not showing the respect the subject deserves! Granted, Further is a lot easier compared to a lot of other subjects but to do well you've still gotta work hard and complete lots and lots of questions and pay attention to detail!!! You don't have to be a great mathematician (take me for example) to do well at further if you put in the hard yards and are observant!

The very best and I am sure you'll be ace!!!

Getting a 40+ in further maths is not too difficult - but getting 45+ is. Further maths is essentially not about how good you are at maths, it's about how good you are at reviewing your errors and not making them in SACS or (most importantly) in the final exams. If you do checkpoints + practise exams and review ALL your errors - you can do great in further maths! Further is a great subjects in VCE because hard work will almost ensure you a decent score. Good luck this year and make sure you understand every error that you have made and remember not to make the same mistake again!
